Assam floods / 55 killed, nearly 3 thousand villages submerged, 19 lakh people affected; the situation is appalling

Delhi: The situation in Assam has become dire due to floods. So far 55 people have died. More than 19 lakh people in 28 districts have been affected by this. The State Disaster Management Authority said that cases of death have been reported in Hojai, Nalbari, Bajali, Dhubri, Kamrup, Kokrajhar and Sonitpur districts. Due to the floods caused by heavy rains, 2,930 villages were submerged in water.

At the same time, 43,338.39 hectares of crop land has also been submerged. Complaints have also been received of 410 animal shedding. Almost all the rivers of the state are flowing above the danger mark. At present, 1,08,104 flood-affected people are taking shelter in 373 relief camps. Landslides have been reported in Dima Hasao, Goalpara, Morigaon, Kamrup and Kamrup (metropolitan) districts.

Boat sinks, three children missing

A boat carrying flood-affected people capsized in Hojai district. Three children on board went missing, while 21 others were rescued. Officials said the villagers were on their way to a safer place from Islampur village late on Friday night when their boat capsized after colliding with an submerged brick-kiln in Raikota area.

PM Modi inquired about the situation from Sarma

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday took information from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma about the prevailing flood situation in the state and assured all possible help from the Centre. Modi tweeted, I pray for the safety and well being of the people of Assam affected by the floods. Sarma replied, "Grateful for his assurance and generosity.

The Chief Minister visited the flood affected Rangiya in Kamrup district. He also reached Fatima Convent School and relief camps in Kolajal.
