Air India Expansion: CCO Nipun Aggarwal Confirms Growth Despite Heavy Losses

Air India CCO Nipun Aggarwal announced that the airline will continue its expansion despite financial losses. With orders for 770 new aircraft, the Tata-owned carrier aims to connect major global cities directly to India and double its capacity over the next five years.

Air India, the premier airline owned by the Tata Group, has officially announced that its ambitious expansion plans will proceed without interruption, despite facing significant financial losses and mounting operational challenges. The airline's management has reiterated its commitment to transforming Air India into a world-class carrier and establishing India as a major global aviation hub. Over the next five years, the company aims to double its capacity and Importantly increase its footprint in the international market.

Vision for Global Connectivity

According to a report by ET, Nipun Aggarwal, the Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) of Air India, stated that the company's primary objective is to ensure that every major city in the world is directly connected to India. Aggarwal emphasized that the goal is to build an airline that every Indian can take pride in. This vision involves not just increasing the number of flights but also enhancing the quality of service and the reach of the network to compete with the best airlines globally.

Massive Aircraft Orders

To support this massive expansion, Air India has placed record-breaking orders for new aircraft. In 2023, the airline placed an order for 470 new planes from industry giants Airbus and Boeing. Following this, in 2024, the company decided to purchase an additional 300 aircraft. This brings the total number of new aircraft on order to 770. While most of these planes are yet to be delivered, they form the backbone of the airline's strategy to launch new routes and increase the frequency of flights on existing high-demand paths.

Financial Challenges and Losses

The expansion comes at a time when the airline is navigating through a difficult financial phase. Recently, the board of Tata Sons expressed concern over the increasing losses at Air India, while there were even discussions regarding the possibility of delaying the delivery of some aircraft. Since the Tata Group acquired Air India from the government in 2022, the airline has faced significant fiscal pressure. In the financial year 2026-27, the airline reported a loss exceeding 27,000 crore rupees.

Reasons Behind the Rising Deficit

Several external factors have contributed to the widening losses of Air India. One of the most significant issues is the closure of Pakistani airspace, which has forced Air India flights heading to Europe and the United States to take much longer routes. These extended flight paths result in Notably higher fuel consumption, increased maintenance costs, and a general rise in flight operation expenses. Plus, ongoing tensions in West Asia have led to a sharp increase in aviation fuel prices, while these factors combined forced Air India to cancel more than 100 flights daily during the months of June, July, and August.

Restoration of Services

Despite these setbacks, Nipun Aggarwal clarified that the reduction in services was only temporary. He mentioned that many of the flights that were temporarily suspended have already been resumed, and the remaining ones will be restored shortly. The airline believes that while the closure of Pakistani airspace poses a long-term challenge that might require strategic adjustments, they're hopeful for a resolution, while for now, the focus remains on restoring normalcy and continuing the journey toward becoming a global aviation leader.
