Uniform Civil Code: This time's big news is coming out from Uttarakhand. Here Uttarakhand Cabinet has approved the UCC bill. Let us tell you that this bill has been approved in the meeting held at CM Dhami’s residence. The bill has been approved under the chairmanship of CM Pushkar Singh Dhami. This was being discussed for many days. Let us tell you that a meeting was called at CM residence at 6 pm today. Many cabinet ministers including CM Dhami were also present in this meeting. There was a long discussion in the meeting regarding this Uniform Civil Code i.e. UCC. Besides, the assembly session starting from February 5 was also discussed in this meeting.

What is UCC in law?

The committee constituted in Uttarakhand under the chairmanship of retired judge Ranjana Prakash Desai has prepared the draft report of UCC. In this draft, there is talk of making a law which will be equally applicable to all religions in matters related to marriage, divorce, property, caste. In the first meeting of the Cabinet immediately after the formation of the government in March 2022, the formation of an expert committee to prepare the draft UCC was approved.

Special session of assembly starting from 5th February

The Pushkar Dhami government of Uttarakhand has called a 4-day special session of the Uttarakhand State Assembly from February 5 to pass the bill on UCC. This draft will also be discussed in the state cabinet before presenting it as a bill in the Assembly. Let us tell you that implementing Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand is a priority of the Dhami government. Now rapid steps are being taken in this direction.

Proposal for uniform law for all citizens

UCC proposes equal civil law for all communities irrespective of caste and religion in the state. It will provide a legal framework for equal marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance laws for all citizens.

The passage of the UCC Bill in Uttarakhand will mark the fulfillment of a major promise made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to the people of the state during the 2022 assembly elections.
