To reach the new target, both nations need to add another 40 billion dollars to their trade volume over the next four years.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal had previously noted on September 10 that achieving this milestone would require consistent double-digit annual growth in trade. To facilitate this, India and Russia are looking to identify new business sectors, improve market access, and specifically increase the presence of Indian products in the Russian market. This shift aims to balance the trade relationship and explore avenues beyond traditional energy imports.

Expanding Industrial Cooperation from Railways to Steel

The meeting also highlighted the importance of industrial cooperation. The INNOPROM trade fair, which recently commenced in New Delhi, is being viewed as a vital platform for fostering new partnerships between Indian and Russian companies. Discussions were held regarding cooperation in the railway sector, tunnel construction, and the entire value chain of the steel industry. Both leaders stressed the need to create direct business-to-business (B2B) opportunities and simplify the process for Indian goods to enter the Russian market.

Strengthening Civil Nuclear Energy Ties

India and Russia are also working to strengthen their cooperation in the field of civil nuclear energy. This collaboration is expected to cover the entire fuel cycle and provide long-term technical and logistical support for nuclear projects throughout their life cycle. This move signifies a deepening of trust and a shared commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Mobility and Skilled Indian Labor in Russia

Another key topic discussed was the movement of skilled Indian workers to Russia, while both countries are considering the establishment of a formal system to facilitate the deployment of more Indian professionals to Russia. This initiative is expected to open new employment opportunities for Indian workers while helping Russia meet its demand for skilled labor in various sectors.

Strategic Focus on Critical Minerals and Fertilizers

The leaders also discussed cooperation in the field of critical minerals, which have become a global strategic necessity. These minerals are essential for high-tech industries, including electric vehicles (EVs), batteries, and electronics, while india and Russia aim to strengthen their supply chains in this area to support their respective strategic industries. On top of that, the supply of fertilizers remains a cornerstone of the economic relationship. Both nations are committed to maintaining and increasing the supply of fertilizers, potentially through strategic joint venture projects.
