Auto and Bus Drivers Strike in Delhi: Various associations of auto, taxi and minibus drivers in Delhi have decided to go on strike on Monday, which may cause inconvenience to the commuters. Various unions are demanding hike in fare rates and reduction in CNG prices.

Organization did not agree even after assurance of Delhi government

Most organizations said they would go on a one-day strike, but the Sarvodaya Driver Association Delhi said it would go on an "indefinite" strike from Monday. The organizations have decided to go on strike despite the Delhi government announcing the formation of a committee to consider the fare revision in a time bound manner.

Demand for subsidy in CNG

Kamaljeet Gill, president of Sarvodaya Driver Association Delhi, said, "We have decided to go on an indefinite strike from Monday as the government does not take any steps to help us by reducing fuel prices and revising fares." Rajendra Soni, general secretary of Delhi Auto Rickshaw Association, said, “We know that the Delhi government is forming a committee but we need a solution to our problems which are not visible. Our demand is that the government (Centre and Delhi) should provide subsidy of Rs 35 per kg on CNG prices.

Symbolic protest against rising prices

Hundreds of auto, taxi and cab drivers recently protested at the Delhi Secretariat demanding subsidy on CNG prices. Soni said, “We cannot run our loss-making autos and cabs every day because CNG prices are on a gallop. This is a symbolic protest to oppose the hike in prices.

The city has over 90,000 autos and over 80,000 registered taxis to complement the public transport system. Shyamlal Gola, general secretary of STA Operators Ekta Manch, said that around 10,000 RTV buses will also remain closed in support of the demand for revision of fares and reduction in CNG prices.
