Bageshwar Dham Peethadhishwar Dhirendra Krishna Shastri has issued a significant and cautionary appeal to the thousands of devotees who visit the Dham, with a specific focus on the safety of women and young girls. During a recent address from the stage, he highlighted the growing concerns regarding the security of female visitors and the potential for external elements to tarnish the reputation of religious institutions. Shastri emphasized that in the current socio-religious climate, there are concerted efforts being made to defame Sanatan Dharma and its sacred sites. Consequently, he has advised that mothers and sisters should avoid visiting Bageshwar Dham alone.
Caution Against Blind Trust
One of the most striking aspects of Dhirendra Shastri's message was his warning regarding the people working or present at the Dham. He explicitly stated that if a woman finds herself at the Dham alone due to unavoidable circumstances, she must not place blind trust in any stranger. More importantly, he extended this caution to the sevadars (volunteers) of the Dham as well, while he urged devotees to remain vigilant and not to follow anyone's instructions blindly, regardless of their association with the site. This warning comes as a measure to prevent any untoward incidents that could be used to malign the spiritual center.
Logistical Constraints and Security Challenges
Shastri provided a realistic overview of the infrastructure at Bageshwar Dham to explain the necessity of his warning. He pointed out that the Dham doesn't currently possess specialized or large-scale arrangements for the overnight stay of a massive number of devotees. That's why, he recommended that visitors shouldn't plan for long stays and should conclude their visit promptly, while he further clarified the limits of the administration's responsibility, stating that while they can manage and secure the immediate temple premises and the Darbar area, providing total security for the entire region is a daunting task. The area surrounding the Dham extends over approximately 5 kilometers, and according to Shastri, it isn't feasible to monitor every inch of this vast expanse with CCTV cameras.
Protecting the Image of Pilgrimage Sites
The Bageshwar Dham chief expressed his distress over the frequent controversies emerging from various pilgrimage centers across India. He noted that such disputes often lead to a negative perception of holy places among the general public. To ensure that Bageshwar Dham remains free from such controversies, he called upon the devotees to be proactive in their own safety. He reiterated that since different types of people visit the Dham, maintaining personal caution is the most effective way to prevent any incident that could be used to defame the institution, while he urged everyone to stay within the temple courtyard and designated safe zones rather than wandering into unknown areas with strangers.
A Call for Collective Awareness
In his concluding remarks, Dhirendra Shastri spoke about the broader issue of women's safety in society. He described the present times as very serious for women and daughters, suggesting that they need to be alert both at home and in public spaces, while he didn't just stop at giving advice but also asked the devotees to become messengers of this safety protocol. He requested the audience to record his appeal on their mobile phones and circulate it widely on social media platforms. By doing so, he hopes to ensure that every potential visitor is aware of the ground realities and security guidelines before they arrive at Bageshwar Dham, thereby creating a safer environment for all.
