Delhi: Monsoon knocked in the country on 1st June, but there has not been a single day of rain in this eight days. In the first week of June, it used to rain for at least one day in about 90 percent of the country, but this time it has not happened. The situation is that in June so far many parts of the country have received neither monsoon nor other systems due to rain. Even in those areas where the monsoon has knocked, it has not rained.

Normally the monsoon starts in the country from 1st June. Due to the south-westerly winds, the monsoon makes its first stop on this date on the Kerala coast and reaches the north-western parts by the last week of June. Historically this is due to pre-monsoon or earlier arrival of monsoon.

June saw the lowest rainfall since 1901

According to the gridded dataset of the Meteorological Department (IMD), the country has received only 17.7 mm of rain in June (till 8:30 am on June 8). This is 37.5 per cent lower than the 1961-2010 average of 28.3 mm. This is the 30th lowest rainfall since 1901 in the span of eight days.

Half the country has not rained even a day in June

This time, the lack of excess rainfall in monsoon is not just a result of less rainfall at some places. There has been no rain at all in most parts of the country so far. IMD's gridded dataset has indicated 4,685 grid rainfall, but so far this month, only 38.1 per cent of the grid has received rainfall for more than one day and 19 per cent for more than three days. About half the grid, or 47 per cent, has not received any rain at all. This no-rainfall grid covers almost the whole of North and Central India.

Where the monsoon reached, there was no rain

Monsoon has not yet reached many parts of the country. So, the rainfall so far in June is not technically an indication of how the monsoon system is functioning in those places. This time the pre-monsoon rains have also reduced. However, rains may be more intense in places where monsoon is not expected at this time, such as north and central India. At the same time, where the monsoon has arrived, there has not been good rain.

According to an IMD press release on June 8, monsoon has arrived in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, half of the south and all the north-eastern states. Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have received more rain since June 1 than other states. At the same time, there has been normal rain in Karnataka.
