Snow Chaos in Himachal: 600 Roads Closed, Thousands Stranded in Manali & Gulmarg

Heavy snowfall has paralyzed life in Himachal Pradesh and J&K. Over 680 roads are blocked, and thousands of tourists are stranded in popular destinations like Manali and Gulmarg.

The Himalayan states are currently witnessing a massive whiteout as heavy snowfall has brought normal life to a grinding halt. Himachal Pradesh Paralyzed: 685 Roads Blocked

In Himachal Pradesh, the situation is critical with 685 roads, including two national highways, being shut down due to heavy snow accumulation. Lahaul-Spiti is the worst-affected district with 292 road closures. Other districts like Chamba, Mandi, and Kullu are also facing severe connectivity issues. The state administration has deployed heavy machinery to clear the snow, but continuous spells are making the task difficult.

Massive Traffic Jams in Manali and Shimla

The influx of tourists seeking the snow experience has led to unprecedented traffic congestion. In Manali, over 100 vehicles were reported to be stuck in deep snow, while on Saturday, commuters faced gridlocks lasting more than 8 hours. Near Shimla, traffic beyond Dhalli was suspended as a thick layer of ice made the Hindustan-Tibet road extremely slippery and dangerous for driving.

NH-44 Shut in Jammu and Kashmir

The strategic Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) remains closed for the second consecutive day. Hundreds of vehicles are stranded at Jakhani in Udhampur. In Gulmarg, the mercury has plummeted to a bone-chilling minus 12 degrees Celsius. The Indian Army and local authorities have stepped in to provide emergency shelter and food to stranded passengers while rescue operations are underway to move them to safer locations.

Tourism Boom in Mussoorie Amidst Cold Wave

While the snow has caused logistical hurdles, it has brought a much-needed boost to the tourism sector in Uttarakhand. Mussoorie and surrounding high-altitude areas are witnessing a massive surge in visitors. Hotels are operating at 100% capacity, and local businesses are reporting high sales. However, the police have advised tourists to avoid non-essential travel to high peaks due to the risk of skidding.

Weather Department Issues Warning

The Meteorological Department has predicted that the snowfall will continue for. The next few days, prompting an orange alert in several regions. Authorities have urged people to stay indoors and avoid traveling to high-altitude zones. Efforts are also being made to restore electricity in dozens of villages where power lines have been snapped by falling trees and heavy snow.
