RBI Rule: At present, it is very difficult to run a vehicle without Fastag. Fastag is necessary to pay toll on most roads. In such a situation, if your vehicle has Fastag, then get its KYC done by 31st January. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Monday said Fastags without KYC will be deactivated or blacklisted by banks after January 31, as part of its move to increase the efficiency of the electronic toll collection system. If this happens, you will not be able to pay toll through Fastag. At the same time, without Fastag, you may have to pay double tax on toll.

NHAI into action after RBI report

NHAI has taken this initiative following recent reports of multiple Fastags being issued for a particular vehicle in violation of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) order and Fastags being issued without KYC. NHAI's instruction has been issued under 'One Vehicle, One Fastag'. It aims to discourage user behavior of using a single FASTag for multiple vehicles or linking multiple FASTags to a particular vehicle.

Get KYC done to avoid problems

To avoid inconvenience, users must ensure that the KYC of their latest Fastag is complete. The NHAI statement said that only the latest Fastag account will remain active. For further assistance or queries, Fastag users can reach out to the nearest toll plaza or toll-free customer care number of their respective issuing banks. The statement also pointed out that FASTag is sometimes deliberately not affixed to the windscreen of the vehicle, resulting in unnecessary delays and inconvenience at toll plazas.

‘One vehicle, one fastag’ will have to be followed

According to the statement, to avoid any inconvenience, users must ensure that the KYC of their latest Fastag is complete. Along with this, users will also have to follow ‘One Vehicle, One Fastag’ and delete all the Fastags previously issued through their banks. “Only the latest FASTag account will remain active as previous FASTags will be deactivated or restricted after January 31, 2024,” NHAI said.

8 Crore drivers use Fastag

More than eight crore drivers across the country are using Fastag, which is about 98 percent of the total vehicles. This system has greatly accelerated the pace of electronic toll collection system in the country. NHAI has taken this step following recent reports of multiple Fastags being issued for one vehicle and Fastags being issued without KYC in violation of RBI order.
