New Delhi : Kolkata Police has issued a notice to Nupur Sharma, who made a controversial statement on Prophet Mohammad. The police have called Sharma for questioning on June 20. An FIR was registered against the expelled BJP spokesperson in East Medinipur on Sunday.

Some people attacked and damaged a local train at Bethuadahari station in West Bengal's Nadia district on Sunday evening over controversial remarks of former BJP spokespersons against Prophet Mohammad. An Eastern Railway official said that some staff of the station and passengers of the Krishnanagar-Lalgola local train were injured in the attack. However, the situation remained largely peaceful on Sunday in Howrah and Murshidabad districts, which have been facing violence for the last two days.

In East Medinipur district, police stopped Leader of Opposition in the state assembly and BJP member Shubhendu Adhikari from going to violence-hit areas of Howrah as a precautionary measure as prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC were imposed there. Police claimed that the visit of Shubhendu Adhikari may create law and order problem there. At the same time, Shubhendu Adhikari said that he would approach the court against it on Monday.

Nupur Sharma seeks time to appear before Bhiwandi Police

At the same time, BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, who was suspended, sought time on Monday to appear before the Bhiwandi police in Maharashtra in this matter. The police had summoned him to record his statement. The senior official said that Sharma has been given time and she will not appear before the Bhiwandi police on Monday.

He said that the Bhiwandi police had registered a case against Nupur Sharma following a complaint lodged by a representative of Raza Academy on May 30. Nupur had made an alleged objectionable statement during a debate on a news channel. A case has also been registered against former BJP functionary Naveen Kumar Jindal. The Bhiwandi police have asked Jindal to record his statement on June 15 over his alleged controversial tweet against Prophet Mohammad.
