In a significant development within the legal community of Uttar Pradesh's capital, lawyers in Lucknow have officially announced a period of collective mass leave starting from May 21, 2026, until May 26, 2026. This decision comes as a direct response and protest against the police action that occurred on May 17, 2026. The legal fraternity has expressed deep resentment over the incident, leading to a complete halt of judicial work in the district for the specified duration.
Joint General Assembly and Leadership
The decision was finalized during a massive joint general assembly of advocates held on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. The meeting was organized under the leadership of the Central Bar Association Lucknow and saw the participation of thousands of lawyers from across the city. The assembly was presided over by Akhilesh Jaiswal Advocate, the President of the Central Bar Association Lucknow. The gathering was attended by presidents, general secretaries, and other key office bearers from all bar associations within the district, showcasing a unified front against the recent police conduct.
Demands for Accountability and Case Withdrawal
During the meeting, several critical resolutions were passed unanimously after extensive discussions. The advocates condemned the alleged lathi charge on lawyers and demanded strict legal action against the responsible police officers. They insisted that FIRs should be registered against the guilty officials. Plus, the legal community demanded the immediate withdrawal of what they termed as false cases registered against lawyers at the Wazirganj police station. They've called for urgent intervention from the government and administration to address these grievances and ensure the protection of their rights and dignity.
Infrastructure and Land Demands
Beyond the immediate protest against police action, the joint general assembly also raised long-standing issues related to infrastructure for advocates, while a resolution was passed demanding that the land of the old Tehsil premises located at the Civil Court be leased to the Central Bar Association Lucknow. Also, the lawyers demanded that the land currently occupied by vacant staff quarters in the old High Court premises be made available for the construction of advocate chambers and parking facilities. These demands highlight the growing need for better working conditions and facilities for the legal professionals in the city.
Legal Representation and Future Strategy
The assembly also addressed the ongoing legal proceedings related to the matter, while for the hearing scheduled in the High Court on May 25, 2026, the assembly authorized Central Bar Association President Akhilesh Jaiswal Advocate and General Secretary Avnish Dixit Advocate to represent the advocates' side. They will present the community's grievances and legal arguments before the court. The lawyers emphasized that their future strategy would be decided after further consultations with advocates across the state, while to facilitate this, the Central Bar Association Lucknow has scheduled another general assembly on May 26, 2026, at 2 PM to review the situation and plan the next steps of their movement.
