The Maharashtra Assembly is set to elect the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly on Sunday after Eknath Shinde takes over as the new Chief Minister and the BJP returns to power. The MLAs who supported the coup against Uddhav Thackeray returned to Mumbai from Goa on Saturday night. Now the state is ready for another round of political developments. After the Speaker is elected, the Shinde government may face a floor test. The process of allocation of portfolios will also be closely monitored and BJP is likely to keep important portfolios.

10 big updates related to the formation of new government in Maharashtra-

1. A two-day special session of the state assembly begins on Sunday where members will elect the next Speaker within 31 months after the fall of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government. The Speaker's post was vacant after the resignation of Congress' Nana Patole last year. Deputy Speaker Narhari Jirwal was working as Speaker.

2. Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis held a meeting of MLAs late Saturday night after the return of about 50 MLAs from Goa. Fadnavis is the deputy CM in the Shinde government.

3. Team Shinde now includes 38 MLAs out of 55 from Shiv Sena, nine Independents and two MLAs from other parties. The BJP has 105 MLAs in the 288-member state assembly.

4. Rahul Narvekar, the BJP MLA from Mumbai's Colaba constituency, is the new coalition government's choice for the speaker's post.

5. The NCP-Shiv Sena-Congress alliance has fielded Shiv Sena MLA Rajan Salvi against Rahul. The MLAs have also been given a whip to be present in the assembly.

6. CM Shinde said, "We are going to Mumbai and will face speaker election on Sunday. Whip (issued by Shiv Sena) is not applicable for us, as we have two-third majority."

7. After nearly two weeks of political turmoil in the state, the first session is expected to be uproar. The Supreme Court is to hear on July 11 the disqualification case of Shinde and 15 MLAs who supported him.

8. Ever since Shinde launched the coup, Balasaheb has been talking of Thackeray's established army. He said the primary reason for parting ways with Uddhav Thackeray was the 'unnatural' alliance with the Congress and the NCP.

9. Mumbai Municipal Body, BMC is also ready for elections. This body is ruled by Shiv Sena.

10. Uddhav Thackeray resigned earlier this week, hours after the Supreme Court ordered a floor test.
