Two missiles struck the airport in Yemen's port city of Aden on Friday night, creating widespread panic in the region. Police have squarely blamed the Iran-backed Houthi rebels for this dangerous assault. Shockingly, this is the second such attack on the airport in less than ten days, raising serious security concerns, while however, in a relief, police officials reported that there were no casualties in this missile strike. With this latest incident, fighting has intensified further in the conflict linked to Iran, with rebels continuously targeting both neighboring Saudi Arabia and Yemen's internationally recognized government, which is backed by Saudi Arabia.
Notably, this was the second major and destructive attack within the city of Aden in just two days. Earlier on Thursday, Houthi rebels targeted a government compound, specifically the palace complex, in Aden, killing at least five people in a brutal escalation. This series of attacks has severely shaken Yemen's internal security and left the government machinery in shock.
Houthi Rebels Fire Two Missiles at the Airport
Giving details about the incident, a military official of the rebels, speaking on condition of anonymity, made a major statement to the Houthi-controlled Saba news agency. He confirmed that they targeted a major military base located near the airport with these missiles. This strategic location houses the main command center of the Saudi-led coalition forces fighting against the rebels, and an arms depot is also situated within this compound. Security officials told the media that earlier on October 7, Houthi rebels had fired two missiles at the same airport, and fortunately, there were no casualties back then either. Emphasizing the severity of this latest attack, Yemen's information minister officially stated that these missiles landed approximately five hundred meters away from a Yemenia Airways plane that was fully prepared for takeoff and on the runway.
A vigilant security official, recounting the eyewitness account of the event, stated that all passengers on board the plane were immediately and safely evacuated during the crisis, averting a massive and catastrophic aviation disaster. Strongly reacting to this cowardly act, Yemen's transport ministry described the attack as a well-planned action by Houthi rebels targeting vital infrastructure and government property. The ministry categorically stated in its statement that these rebels are fully bent on endangering the lives of innocent civilians at any cost and have no regard for humanity.
Civil War Reignited and Regional Tensions
This unexpected surge in fighting within Yemen has reignited the already devastating civil war in the country. This entire sequence of events began months ago amidst broader regional tensions linked to Iran. Deeply angered by attacks on Sanaa airport under their own control and the long-standing blockade imposed on the rebels, the Houthi rebels announced their own unilateral blockade against neighboring Saudi Arabia in retaliation.
Since then, these rebels have continuously targeted all major airports, sensitive oil installations, and strategic military bases of Saudi Arabia. Due to these actions by Houthi rebels, thousands of domestic and international flights have been severely disrupted, and a total of nineteen people have lost their lives so far. Most of these deaths occurred during fierce attacks on the international airport in the country's capital, Riyadh. Saudi Arabia, recognized as the world's largest oil exporter, suffered another massive and deep blow when the main headquarters of their most prominent oil establishment, Aramco, was also targeted by these militants.
Strait of Hormuz Facing Threat from Iran and the Red Sea
Amidst this entire sequence of events, changing their strategy, Houthi rebels aggressively began advancing towards the Red Sea coast and illegally captured several crucial parts of the strategically vital Bab el-Mandeb Strait. This waterway is considered a crucial and alternative maritime route to the Strait of Hormuz, which currently faces constant threats from Iran.
To deal with the prevailing serious situation, the Saudi-led military coalition launched a massive and decisive military campaign this month. The main and clear objective of this special operation is to completely rout these rebels from this strategically important location and bring all those areas back under their control. This turmoil and tense situation has once again shaken global markets worldwide. On the other hand, innocent civilians of Yemen, such as people living in the besieged historic city of Taiz, are forced to face extremely inhuman and horrific hardships to live their lives amidst this brutal conflict.
