Punjab Congress chief Navjot Sidhu on Wednesday resigned from his post after the party's humiliating defeat in the assembly elections. He has sent a one-line resignation letter to party chief Sonia Gandhi. Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday asked the PCC presidents of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur to tender their resignations to facilitate the reconstitution of the PCC.

Earlier on Tuesday, all the parties were heard in the meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWUC) while searching for the reason for the defeat in the assembly elections. In the case of Punjab, most leaders had blamed the public rhetoric between Navjot Sidhu, Charanjit Channi and former chief Sunil Jakhar apart from infighting within the party.

Many ministers had blamed Sidhu

Former ministers Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Balbir Singh Sidhu, MPs Ravneet Bittu and Gurjit Aujla had directly blamed Sidhu for the defeat. After party president Sonia Gandhi demanded the resignation of five state chiefs, including Sidhu, it is believed that the process of blaming each other for the defeat will stop and the activities related to the selection of the new chief will intensify in the party.

Harish Chaudhary had a meeting with the leaders of Malwa

On Tuesday, Punjab Congress affairs in-charge Harish Chaudhary had called a meeting of Congress candidates and leaders of Malwa region in Chandigarh. Punjab Congress chief Navjot Sidhu and former Chief Minister Charanjit Channi also participated in the meeting. During the meeting, several leaders mainly cited infighting within the party as the reason for the defeat. The leaders said that the rift between the party's responsible leaders Navjot Sidhu, Charanjit Channi and Sunil Jakhar made public the internal strife of the party, due to which the party had to bear the loss in the elections.
