Piyush Goyal on India US Trade Deal Benefits Global Market Competition

Union Minister Piyush Goyal stated that the proposed India US trade agreement will grant India a strong competitive edge in the international market once completed.

A major and significant statement has been issued by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal regarding the proposed trade agreement between India and the United States. Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal attended the fourth ISID-IDRA National Conference on Industrial Transformation of India held in Delhi on Thursday, where he clearly stated that upon the completion of the trade agreement with the United States, India will secure a strong competitive edge in the international market. During his address, he placed special emphasis on the fact that the true foundation and benchmark of trade is In essence which country can perform better than others in specific products and services.

Continuing his address, Union Minister Piyush Goyal referred to India's trade agreements so far and noted that India has successfully concluded a total of eight (8) Free Trade Agreements, commonly known as FTAs. He shared that after the complete details of all these agreements were made public, he has not encountered a single person to this day who could point out any major flaw or serious error within them. The minister also specifically mentioned that the ninth (9) proposed agreement with the United States is being unnecessarily politicized by certain political individuals and elements, even though the complete and comprehensive details of this agreement have not yet been officially made public. Despite this, he expressed full confidence before the citizens of the country that when all the terms and conditions of this agreement come to light, the common citizens and the business community of the nation will welcome it wholeheartedly.

India US Trade Deal Nears Final Stages of Negotiation

At present, discussions are continuously underway at diplomatic and economic levels to officially finalize this crucial trade agreement between India and the United States. United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently held a high-level meeting with External Affairs Minister S, while jaishankar during his visit to Mumbai, and following that meeting, he stated before the media that both nations are extremely close to reaching the trade agreement. According to his assessment, discussions are now pending only on a select few minor issues, and he expressed strong optimism that these remaining points will be resolved through mutual consent in the near future.

On the other hand, Union Minister Piyush Goyal also stated last week, clarifying that the first phase of this proposed agreement has now entered its final stages. According to him, mutual discussions on most of the major and complex issues concerning the trade deal have already been concluded, and officials from both countries are now sitting down to finalize only the minor terms and fine details required to bring this deal to fruition.

Tariffs and Russian Oil Purchases Remain Major Challenges

However, various obstacles and challenges have continually emerged along the path of advancing this entire process and bringing it to finality. Disagreements between the two countries persisted for a prolonged period over sensitive issues such as import tariffs imposed by the United States and India's continued procurement of crude oil from Russia. The situation grew even more complex when trade negotiations between the two nations broke down abruptly in August 2025, resulting in the United States imposing steep tariffs of up to fifty percent (50%) on a majority of Indian goods. Subsequently, as a result of diplomatic efforts, both nations agreed upon a new framework in February 2026, under which this tariff rate was reduced to eighteen percent (18%). Nevertheless, even after this major relief, the pace of talks between the two countries slowed down once again.

India Set Conditions Similar to Manufacturing Nations Like Vietnam

Earlier this month, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also publicly acknowledged that the pace of talks advancing this trade agreement has experienced some delays and has come to a standstill. India's clear and steadfast position has been that the final tariff applied to its goods should be comparable to the duties levied on other major manufacturing nations such as Vietnam, so that Indian companies can engage in fair and strong competition alongside other nations in the global and international market. During the recent meeting between Marco Rubio and S. Jaishankar, extensive discussions were also held on strategic topics such as energy security and defense cooperation alongside trade. Attention from experts across the country and the world is now focused on when both nations will manage to resolve the remaining hurdles and formally finalize this major trade agreement.
