Rajasthan Panchayat Election Update: New Reservation Lottery Dates Announced for 2026

In a significant development regarding the preparations for the Panchayati Raj institution elections in Rajasthan, a major update has emerged concerning the reservation lottery process, while the Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department has officially determined and announced the new dates for the reservation lottery to be conducted at both the district and sub-division levels. New Schedule for Reservation Lottery

According to the official order released by the department, the reservation lottery for the positions of District Council members, Pradhans, and Panchayat Samiti members is scheduled to take place on September 17, 2026. Following this, the lottery for the posts of Sarpanch and Ward Panch will be conducted on September 18, 2026. These dates are crucial for determining the seat reservations for various categories, which is a mandatory step before the actual polling begins.

Postponement and Judicial Context

The department has issued specific instructions to all District Collectors and Sub-divisional Officers to ensure that all necessary actions and arrangements are in place for these dates. It's important to note that the reservation lottery for Panchayati Raj institutions was previously proposed for August 17 and August 18, 2026. However, those dates were postponed, leading to the current announcement of the new schedule in September, while the departmental order highlights that this scheduling is in alignment with the High Court's order dated July 20, 2026. In response to the court's directives, the state government has resolved to complete the entire election process for both urban local bodies and Panchayati Raj institutions by November 15, 2026.

Phased Election Strategy

The State Election Commission has outlined a phased approach to ensure the timely completion of the elections. In a report submitted to the High Court, the Commission clarified that the elections for urban local bodies would be conducted in the first phase, while this will be followed by the elections for Panchayati Raj institutions in the second phase. The current advancement of the reservation process for panchayats is a direct consequence of this strategic planning. Progress of Completed Processes

While the lottery for district and sub-division level panchayat posts is pending for September, some significant milestones have already been achieved. The process for determining reservations and conducting the lottery for the posts of chairpersons of urban local bodies and the Zila Pramukh (District Heads) of District Councils was successfully completed on August 13, 2026.
