Delhi MCD Mayor Election / Voting begins for Delhi Mayor election, Congress refuses to participate

Delhi MCD Mayor Election : Delhi will get a new mayor today. The results of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections came on December 8 last year. AAP had won the maximum number of seats in this. Today the contest is between Shaily Oberoi of AAP and Rekha Gupta of BJP. Apart from these, AAP's Ashu Thakur is also in the fray as the third candidate. The Congress has refused to participate in the mayoral election.


On February 17, the matter reached the Supreme Court where during the hearing, the court said that nominated members do not have the right to vote. After this, the fourth attempt of voting in the mayoral election is being held on Wednesday.


Updates related to mayoral election...

First of all MPs and MLAs came for voting, after that the voting of councilors is going on.

Protem Speaker Satya Sharma asked the councilors present in the House to vote peacefully.

Congress is not taking part in MCD elections.

Heavy security force has been deployed outside the MCD ahead of the commencement of the elections.


Know why there was ruckus on the election before today

The reason for the uproar was LG VK Saxena's decision to allow 10 nominated MCD members to vote. AAP's mayoral candidate Shaili Oberoi had reached the Supreme Court regarding this. In this, the decision to give voting rights to the nominated councilors in the mayoral election was challenged. On February 17, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of AAP. Was asked to issue notice within 24 hours.


There were three attempts on January 6, January 24 and February 6 for the deputy mayor along with the mayor and the six members of the standing committee, but each time the proceedings were adjourned following uproar by the BJP and AAP.


AAP has 151 corporators, out of which 134 are elected and 13 MLAs, 3 MPs and independent corporators are in support. While the BJP has 112 councillors, including 104 elected councillors, 7 MPs and 1 MLA.


SC said – Nominated members do not have the right to vote

On February 17, a hearing was held in the Supreme Court on the issue of Delhi Mayor elections. The court directed to conduct these elections in the first meeting. For this, asked to issue notice within 24 hours. During the hearing, the court said that nominated members do not have the right to vote.

LG appoints BJP corporator Satya Sharma as pro tem speaker for mayoral election. Earlier, AAP had proposed the name of Mukesh Goyal. AAP objected to Satya's name. After this, as soon as Protem Speaker Satya started administering oath to the nominated members of LG, AAP started protesting and shouting slogans.


The Aam Aadmi Party says that the nominated members are not sworn in first, but the BJP is changing the tradition. BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi said that AAP leaders are not aware of the rules. That's why they are creating ruckus. Why fear when they are in majority? You MPs do the same thing in the Rajya Sabha.


On the other hand, the Congress decided not to participate in the mayoral election. AAP MLA Atishi has accused the Congress of favoring the BJP after she decided not to contest the polls. 273 members will vote in the Mayor's election. A figure of 133 is needed for a majority. AAP has 150 votes while BJP has 113 votes.


AAP-BJP uproar in three meetings

January 6: AAP and BJP members clashed at the MCD headquarters. Due to the uproar, the process of election of mayor, deputy mayor and members of the standing committee had to be postponed.

January 24: Due to the ruckus on January 6, police had to be deployed at the headquarters. However, after this the members of both the parties started ruckus. Because of this, the House had to be adjourned again.

February 6: The mayoral election was postponed for the third time. Members of BJP and AAP started a ruckus after the 10 nominated members were approved for the vote. After this the proceedings of the MCD House were adjourned. The matter reached the Supreme Court.


273 members will vote, majority with AAP

273 members will vote in the Mayor's election. A figure of 138 is needed for a majority. In the absence of the Congress, a figure of 133 is needed. AAP has 134 councillors. Apart from this, there are 3 Rajya Sabha MPs and 13 MLAs. BJP has a total of 113 votes including 7 MPs and 1 MLA.


There, there are 9 councilors of Congress and two councilors of Independents. In this election, 250 councilors along with 10 MPs (7 Lok Sabha MPs and 3 Rajya Sabha MPs), 13 assembly members will vote.


AAP's Shelly Oberoi and BJP's Rekha Gupta contest

AAP's Aadmi Party has fielded Shelly Oberoi for mayor, while Rekha Gupta is in the fray from the BJP. Whereas, AAP has nominated Mohammad Iqbal and BJP has nominated Kamal Bagdi for deputy mayor. However, with 134 corporators, AAP is ahead in majority. Apart from this, there are 3 Rajya Sabha MPs and 13 MLAs. In this context, the election of Shelly Mayor is almost certain.
