Samajwadi Party (SP) President Akhilesh Yadav met Trinamool Congress (TMC) Supremo Mamata Banerjee on Thursday to extend his emotional support following the defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections. The meeting took place at Mamata Banerjee's residence in Kolkata, where Yadav also met her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee. Following the discussion, Akhilesh Yadav launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), asserting that 'Didi' (Mamata Banerjee) has not lost the battle. He emphasized the need for solidarity among opposition forces in the current political climate.
Allegations of Strategic Manipulation by BJP
During his interaction, Akhilesh Yadav claimed that the BJP implemented a strategy in Bengal that was first 'trialed' in Uttar Pradesh. He stated that the methods used in UP were executed on a much larger scale in West Bengal, while according to Yadav, the visuals emerging from Bengal were more intense than those seen during the UP by-elections, suggesting that these actions have severely damaged the fabric of democracy. He further remarked that Mamata Banerjee is a thorn in the BJP's side due to the party's feudal mindset, which he claims prevents them from tolerating the progress of women, while in this context, he referred to Rekha Gupta, whom he called the BJP's only woman Chief Minister, as a half-complete CM.
Questions Over Security Forces and Election Commission
Akhilesh Yadav accused the BJP of spreading anarchy and raised concerns over the burning of TMC offices. He questioned the accountability of the Election Commission and the Home Minister regarding security, noting that over 3 lakh security personnel were deployed for the polls. He pointed out that a significant portion of these forces came from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, leaving their respective borders vacant, while yadav predicted that when elections occur in Uttar Pradesh, forces from Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Assam would be brought in. He alleged that the BJP and the Election Commission together looted democracy, claiming that the BJP secured victories in areas where a high number of votes were cut.
Strengthening Opposition Unity and the INDIA Alliance
According to a report by PTI, the meeting focused on discussing the post-election political scenario in West Bengal and reaffirming support for opposition unity against the BJP. Following the TMC's performance in the assembly elections, Mamata Banerjee has expressed her commitment to further strengthening the INDIA bloc, while the two leaders discussed strategies to consolidate the alliance and counter the BJP's influence nationally. The meeting underscores the growing coordination between the SP and TMC as they prepare for future political challenges.
The meeting concluded with Akhilesh Yadav reiterating his stance against the BJP's electoral tactics. He maintained that the opposition remains united in its resolve to protect democratic values and will continue to work together to challenge the ruling party's narrative across the country.
