Telangana Elections: An NRI leader of Congress, who was hoping to get Indian citizenship, has got a big setback. According to reports, in a major blow to Congress party's NRI leader Jhansi Reddy, the authorities have rejected her application for Indian citizenship. Let us tell you that American citizen Jhansi Reddy is a contender for Congress ticket from Palakurthi assembly constituency. However, now his ticket is in jeopardy due to the rejection of his petition for Indian citizenship.

‘Had not stayed in India for 12 consecutive months’

According to reports, the Hyderabad District Collector informed Reddy that her request for Indian citizenship could not be considered as she had not been continuously residing in India for one year immediately preceding the date of application. Jhansi Reddy had applied for Indian citizenship under Section 5(1)(g) of the Citizenship Act, 1955. The District Collector wrote that he entered India on June 16, 2022, but had not continuously resided in India for a period of 12 months immediately preceding the date of application, which is mandatory for citizenship.

Reddy was campaigning in the hope of getting a ticket

Jhansi Reddy was informed that she can reapply for citizenship if she fulfills all the conditions as per the rules laid down under the Indian Citizenship Act, 2009. Jhansi Reddy is the founder and president of Women Empowerment Telugu Association, a US-based organization that aims to create opportunities for women. He did philanthropic work in Palakurthi constituency of Telangana, which is currently represented by BRS leader and Panchayat Raj Minister E. Dayakar Rao. She had been actively campaigning in the constituency for the past few weeks in the hope of getting a ticket from the Congress.
