Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a scathing attack on the opposition in the Lok Sabha on Friday. ' The Home Minister was responding to the discussion on the Constitution (131st) Amendment Bill 2026, the Delimitation Bill 2026, and the Union Territory Law (Amendment) Bill 2026. He clarified that those opposing delimitation are In essence opposing the increase in seats reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).
Women's Reservation and the 2029 Elections
Amit Shah informed the House that 56 women MPs participated in this significant debate. He noted that while no one directly opposed the Women's Reservation Bill, the INDIA alliance's opposition is regarding its implementation. Shah announced that the 2029 Lok Sabha elections will be held based on women's reservation. Challenging the opposition, he said that if they pass the bill, the government is ready to increase seats by 50% in every state. He warned that if the opposition doesn't vote and the bill fails, the women of the country will hold them accountable.
Delimitation and the Principle of 'One Person, One Vote'
The Home Minister emphasized the necessity of delimitation, stating that there is currently a massive disparity in representation.
He stated that the principle of 'One person - One vote - One value' is the core of our Constitution, and delimitation is essential to ensure this. He accused the Congress of depriving the country of proper representation for 50 years.
Accusations Against Congress as Anti-OBC
Amit Shah labeled the Congress party as the biggest opponent of Other Backward Classes (OBC). He stated that Congress opposed the caste census in 1951 and 1971, and now, after losing elections, they're pretending to be OBC well-wishers. Shah pointed out that Congress has never given an OBC Prime Minister, whereas the BJP has provided a Prime Minister from the extremely backward classes. Highlighting the Modi government's achievements, he mentioned that there are 27 OBC ministers in the current government, accounting for 40% of the cabinet. On top of that, the Modi government gave constitutional status to the OBC Commission and empowered them by granting the right to revise lists.
Religious Reservation and the 2026 Census
Speaking on the issue of reservation, Amit Shah clarified that the Indian Constitution doesn't accept reservation based on religion. He stated that reservation is acquired by birth and can't be obtained through any other means. He accused the INDIA alliance of talking about Muslim reservation under the policy of appeasement and asserted that the BJP will neither give reservation based on religion nor allow anyone else to do so, while Also, he made a major announcement that the Narendra Modi cabinet has decided to conduct the 2026 census with a caste component. He dismissed rumors that this bill was brought to postpone the caste census.
Protecting the Representation of South Indian States
Responding to the North vs. South narrative, Amit Shah said that the Southern states have as much right over this House as the North Indian states.
He concluded by stating that the purpose of delimitation is to empower women and implement reservation on time in accordance with the spirit of the Constitution so that the 2029 elections can be held with women's reservation.
