Gujrat | Seven Gujarat Congress MLAs voted in favor of Draupadi Murmu. However, the Congress has so far failed to trace the MLAs who went across party lines and voted for the NDA candidate. This has happened at a time when assembly elections are due at the end of the year. The party fears that these MLAs may join BJP sooner or later. Cross-voting has not only increased the concern of the Congress but also weakened the claim in which the party had said that we will give a tough fight to the BJP.

Those who cross vote can go to BJP

State Congress President Jagdish Thakor has said that no disciplinary action will be taken against the MLAs who cross-voted as the party is yet to identify them. “At present no action is being taken. It is clear that the MLAs who have done cross voting will show their allegiance to the BJP sooner or later. Thakor had said a day earlier that he would be expelled from the party by taking strict action against cross-voting MLAs. Now their tone has changed.

Thakor said the exercise to identify the seven MLAs who did cross-voting would amount to doubting the loyalty of all the MLAs. “In Rajya Sabha elections, MLAs have to show the observer before casting their vote in the ballot box. In the case of presidential election, there is a secret ballot.

Yashwant Sinha got seven votes less

When votes were counted on Thursday, 63 Congress MLAs and 57 MLAs voted in favor of opposition-backed candidate Yashwant Sinha, despite the support of the lone independent MLA. At the same time, NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu got 121 votes. Whereas BJP has 111 MLAs in the assembly. This means that Murmu got 10 more votes, while Yashwant Sinha got seven votes less than expected.
