Coronavirus / Coronavirus cases in India rise to 3,374; death toll reaches 77

New Delhi: With 472 fresh cases reported in 24 hours, the total number of coronavirus positive cases in India jumped to 3,374 today, according to the latest figures released by the Health Ministry. The death toll has gone up to 77 while 266 have recovered. Maharashtra (490), Tamil Nadu (485) and Delhi (445) are among the worst affected states.

The Health Ministry on Saturday said that over 1,000 coronavirus cases found in 17 states have been traced to the Tablighi Jamaat congregation. The Tablighi Jamaat event, held last month in Delhi's Nizamuddin area, has became a key source for the spread of Covid-19 in India as many of the participants travelled to various parts of the country after attending it.

Globally, the total number of coronavirus cases has crossed 1.2 million, according to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University while the death toll is near 65,000. Italy recorded the highest number of deaths at 15,362, followed by Spain (11,947), US (8,488), (France (7,560) and UK (4,313). As confirmed Covid-19 cases in the US surpassed 300,000, US President Donald Trump warned Americans on Saturday to brace for a "very horrendous" number of coronavirus deaths in the coming days.
