Delhi: The Congress, which is engaged in the strategy and implementation of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, is lagging behind in the preparations for the Gujarat Assembly elections. On one hand, while the ruling BJP has started campaigning, the Congress is yet to decide the election strategy. Apart from this, the Aam Aadmi Party is also gaining strength in the state. Elections are to be held in the state at the end of the year.

The making of BJP's Draupadi Murmu as the NDA's presidential candidate may spoil the math of the Congress's 'Kham' theory. The challenge before the Congress in the Gujarat Assembly elections is to repeat its performance more than to oust the BJP from power. In the 2017 elections, the Congress was successful in stopping the BJP from 99 seats by winning 77 seats. But, the party has weakened in the last five years. The trio of Hardik Patel, Alpesh Thakur and Jignesh Mevani is shattered. Now only Jignesh is left with the party.

remembered the bad

The Congress was hoping for a better performance in Saurashtra by inducting senior Patidar Samaj leader Naresh Patel, but Patel spoiled the strategy by refusing to join politics. Patidars play a decisive role in about three dozen seats in Saurashtra. After Naresh Patel's refusal, the party remembered former Chief Minister Madhav Singh Solanki's Kham (Kshatriya, Harijan, Adivasi and Muslim).

Tribal voters have been with Congress

The party also started conferences and other programs keeping 'Kham' at the centre. In Gujarat, there are about 14 percent Kshatriyas, 8 percent Dalits, 15 percent Adivasis and 10 percent Muslims. Tribal voters have been voting in favor of Congress. In the 2017 assembly elections, the Congress had won 14 of the 27 tribal seats. Whereas BJP got 9 seats. The Bharatiya Tribal Party got two seats. Hence the Congress expected a better performance in the tribal seat.

Murmu's candidature signal to tribal voters

The Bharatiya Janata Party has given a clear message to the tribal voters of Gujarat by making Draupadi Murmu its presidential candidate. Regarding this move of the BJP, a senior Congress leader said that in the last few years, the Bharatiya Janata Party has focused more on tribal voters than our party. Making the first tribal woman president is also part of this strategy. However, it is difficult to say how much benefit it will get in the election.
