The Government of India has issued a comprehensive update regarding the availability and supply chain of essential fertilizers, specifically Urea and Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP), assuring farmers across the nation that there will be no shortage despite the ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia. The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers on Sunday highlighted that the supply remains normal and solid, with domestic production exceeding set targets and international shipments arriving as scheduled at Indian ports.
Safe Passage of Fertilizer Shipments
Despite the conflict in West Asia, which has raised concerns about global maritime trade and logistics, India's fertilizer imports have remained largely unaffected. The ministry reported that out of 20 ships carrying fertilizers and raw materials destined for India, 15 have already safely crossed the strategic Strait of Hormuz. These vessels are currently proceeding toward various Indian ports according to their original schedules. 11 lakh tons of Sulfur. This successful transit demonstrates the resilience of India's supply chain management even in volatile regions.
Upcoming Shipments and Strategic Planning
The ministry further detailed that five more ships are in the pipeline and are expected to reach India soon. 45 lakh tons of Urea. Also, two more Urea vessels and one Sulfur vessel are currently being loaded at their respective ports. The government expressed confidence that these shipments will also arrive on time, ensuring a continuous flow of nutrients for the agricultural sector. The proactive planning and constant monitoring by the government have been instrumental in preventing any major disruptions that could have arisen due to the maritime traffic issues in the Strait of Hormuz.
Diversified Sourcing and Global Coordination
To mitigate risks associated with the West Asia crisis, the Indian government has diversified its sourcing strategy. For Urea, arrangements have been made with multiple countries including Oman, Malaysia, Vietnam, Georgia, Nigeria, Russia, Finland, Egypt, Algeria, Turkey, and the Netherlands. For DAP and NPK fertilizers, India has secured supplies from Russia, Morocco, Egypt, the USA, Jordan, South Korea, Tunisia, and Saudi Arabia, utilizing the Red Sea route. This multi-country approach ensures that India isn't overly dependent on any single region for its fertilizer needs.
Record Domestic Production and Stock Levels
Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers, JP Nadda, noted that while the West Asia crisis impacted global supply chains and increased delivery times and costs, the central government took timely steps to protect farmers' interests. A significant recovery was seen in the supply of natural gas to fertilizer plants, which had dropped by nearly 65 percent during the peak of the crisis but has now returned to normal. Consequently, all domestic Urea plants are operating at full capacity. 86 lakh tons. 84 lakh tons. 50 lakh tons. 9 lakh tons, ensuring that farmers have access to the necessary inputs for their crops.
