The 4th India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable
The External Affairs Minister is in Singapore to participate in the 4th India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR), which is scheduled to take place on Thursday. Ahead of this crucial meeting, Jaishankar and Balakrishnan held detailed discussions regarding the further strengthening of bilateral relations. They also exchanged views on the prevailing global geopolitical situation, while jaishankar expressed his intent to continue these discussions with the Singaporean Foreign Minister during the formal roundtable session on Thursday. The ISMR serves as a primary platform for enhancing economic and strategic cooperation between the two nations, while the history of this roundtable includes the first meeting in New Delhi in September 2022, the second in Singapore in August 2024, and the third in New Delhi in August 2025. The upcoming fourth meeting will see participation from other high-ranking Indian officials, including Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Minister of State for Electronics and IT Jitin Prasada.
Economic Significance and Trade Relations
India and Singapore upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2015. Since then, cooperation has expanded across various sectors, including digital technology, defense, security, education, and skill development. Singapore holds a prominent position as India's largest trading partner among ASEAN nations. It's also the largest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into India. On top of that, Singapore is a major source of External Commercial Borrowings and Foreign Portfolio Investment for India. In the fiscal year 2024-25, Singapore was India's sixth largest trading partner. During this period, India imported goods worth 21 billion 200 million dollars from Singapore and exported goods worth 14 billion 400 million dollars. Over the last 10 years, Singapore's annual investment in India has consistently ranged between 10 billion and 15 billion dollars.

The Indian community plays a vital role in Singapore's social and economic fabric. According to the 2020 census of Singapore, people of Indian origin constitute approximately 9 percent of the resident population of 4,040,000. Also, Singapore is home to about 1,640,000 foreign nationals, including many Indian citizens. The Indian population in Singapore includes students and professionals working in diverse sectors such as financial services, information technology, construction, and the maritime industry. Notably, Tamil is one of the four official languages of Singapore, alongside English, Mandarin Chinese, and Malay, while the new Chancery Complex is expected to better serve this diverse and vibrant community, further solidifying the cultural and people-to-people ties that underpin the strategic partnership.
