India and Belgium have officially embarked on a new chapter of diplomatic and economic cooperation by convening the first-ever India-Belgium Strategic Dialogue, while this landmark meeting was co-chaired by India's External Affairs Minister, Dr. S, while jaishankar, and Belgium's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maxime Prévot. The dialogue marks a significant step in institutionalizing the bilateral relationship, making it more comprehensive and result-oriented within the broader framework of the India-European Union (EU) strategic partnership.
Strengthening the Strategic Framework
The Strategic Dialogue is designed to serve as a regular platform for political consultation between the two nations, while during the discussions, both sides emphasized the need to align their complementary strengths to achieve tangible outcomes. Dr. S. Jaishankar highlighted that Belgium holds a unique and special position in India's engagement with Europe. He noted that this new mechanism would facilitate deeper cooperation across a spectrum of critical sectors, ensuring that the partnership evolves in tune with contemporary global challenges.
Key Areas of Cooperation
The meeting saw extensive deliberations on several key pillars of the bilateral relationship. Special emphasis was placed on trade and investment, which form the backbone of the economic tie-up. Both nations discussed the green energy transition, recognizing the urgent need for sustainable solutions. Innovation and technology were also at the forefront, with both parties agreeing to share expertise and foster collaborative research. Other critical areas included connectivity, defense and security, and regional and global issues of mutual concern. The leaders also stressed the importance of enhancing people-to-people ties to build a stronger social foundation for the partnership.
India-EU Business Forum and FTA Focus
Parallel to the strategic dialogue, the India-EU Business Forum was organized, drawing participation from industry representatives from India, Belgium, and other European nations. A major highlight of the forum was the detailed discussion on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The participants explored new opportunities for trade and investment that the FTA could unlock, aiming to create a more smooth economic environment. Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and Minister of State for Electronics and IT Jitin Prasada represented the Indian side at the forum, while Belgium was represented by Matthias Diependaele, Minister-President of Flanders, and Adrien Dolimont, Minister-President of Wallonia.
Future Roadmap and Economic Missions
Looking ahead, both countries have agreed to maintain the momentum through regular high-level meetings. A significant milestone on the horizon is the Belgian Economic Mission scheduled for March 2025, which Maxime Prévot described as a testament to the strong economic ties between the two nations. Plus, both sides decided to advance various key initiatives during proposed high-level visits in 2026. The dialogue concluded with a reaffirmed commitment to a future-oriented, ambitious, and strong strategic partnership, aimed at taking bilateral relations to new heights amidst a changing global landscape.
