A major controversy has erupted in the Khoh Nagoriyan area of Jaipur involving allegations of illegal road construction on ancestral land, while the dispute centers around Rajaram Gurjar, the husband of former Jaipur Mayor Somya Gurjar, who has been accused by local landowners of constructing a road overnight on their private property. The incident has sparked significant political and social unrest, leading to high-level administrative interventions and the postponement of a planned large-scale protest.
Allegations of Illegal Construction
Social worker and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker Badri Singh Rajawat has spearheaded the accusations against Rajaram Gurjar. According to Rajawat, the road was constructed under the cover of darkness without any legal process or the provision of compensation to the rightful landowners. He further alleged that not only was the road laid out, but street light poles were also installed with remarkable speed, while the landowners contend that while a 160 feet wide road is indeed proposed in the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) Master Plan for this area, the current construction was carried out forcibly and without following the mandatory legal protocols for land acquisition and compensation.
JDA's Stance and Legal Action
The Jaipur Development Authority has presented a different version of events. JDA officials claim that the road in question isn't a new construction but has existed for approximately 10 years. According to the JDA, the road is a vital part of the city's Master Plan, designed to be 160 feet wide. In response to the landowners' actions—who reportedly dug up and damaged the newly laid surface in protest—the JDA has filed a formal police complaint, while the FIR was registered against unknown individuals for the destruction of government property and causing damage to public infrastructure. This move by the JDA further intensified the standoff between the authorities and the local residents.
Political Support and Social Mobilization
The issue quickly gained momentum as several prominent political figures and social organizations extended their support to the aggrieved landowners. During a press conference, Badri Singh Rajawat highlighted that the landowners faced intimidation and that false cases were registered against them at the Khoh Nagoriyan police station when they attempted to resist the construction. The cause has been backed by influential leaders including Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, former Leader of Opposition Rajendra Rathore, BJP State General Secretary Shravan Singh Bagdi, and State Vice President Mukesh Dadhich. Other notable supporters include former Minister Rajendra Singh Gudha, the Rajput Sabha, Karni Sena, and representatives from the Sarv Samaj. This collective support turned a local land dispute into a significant regional issue.
Administrative Assurances and Protest Postponement
Following intense pressure and the threat of a massive demonstration at the Shaheed Smarak on August 20, the administration stepped in to mediate. Badri Singh Rajawat announced that the protest has been postponed after receiving concrete assurances of justice from the authorities. Key administrative actions include the removal of the Khoh Nagoriyan Station House Officer (SHO) and a JDA official from their current posts. Plus, an agreement was reached to conduct a high-level inquiry into the cases filed and to register an FIR against Rajaram Gurjar. A committee has also been constituted to investigate the potential complicity of JDA employees, with the possibility of suspensions pending the probe, while the administration also assured action regarding arrest warrants issued by the court. In a parallel move, the Shri Rajput Sabha Jaipur Dehat has submitted memorandums to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, the BJP National President, and the RSS.
Rajaram Gurjar's Defense
In his defense, Rajaram Gurjar has categorically denied any involvement in the matter, while he stated that he has no connection to the land in question and emphasized that the road belonged to the JDA. He argued that the JDA itself filed the police case because its property was being destroyed. Gurjar claimed that his name is being unnecessarily dragged into the controversy for political reasons, while he also pointed out that the individual previously apprehended by the police has a prior criminal record and allegedly fled from custody. Amidst these developments, the JDA has taken internal action by placing Assistant Engineer Ashwini Kumar Agarwal, who was working in Zone 10, under APO (Awaiting Posting Order). This order was issued by JDA Additional Commissioner Priya Balram Sharma, as the authority maintains its stance that the road is a 10 year old asset.
