Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a significant bilateral meeting in Delhi to discuss a wide range of critical global and regional issues. Following their discussions, both leaders addressed a joint press conference, highlighting the depth of the partnership between the two nations. The talks covered a broad spectrum of topics, including the ongoing Iran conflict, the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, the Russia-Ukraine war, the global energy crisis, terrorism, international trade, and the stability of the Indo-Pacific region.
Strengthening Strategic Ties
Minister Jaishankar emphasized that the relationship between India and the United States is consistently growing stronger. He noted that the discussions involved a comprehensive review of the situations in West Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and East Asia, while both nations expressed a shared commitment to maintaining peace and stability in these regions, recognizing the interconnected nature of global security and economic prosperity.
Energy Security and 1.4 Billion People
A primary focus of the meeting was energy security, while 4 billion citizens. He stressed that the availability of energy and its affordability are crucial factors for India's economic growth and the well-being of its people, while consequently, detailed discussions were held regarding the energy crisis and the stability of oil supplies. The two leaders also reviewed progress in civil nuclear cooperation and welcomed the expanding collaboration in the energy sector between India and the US.
Advancing the Trade Deal
On the economic front, Minister Jaishankar revealed that negotiations for a trade agreement between India and the United States are progressing. He announced that a US team is scheduled to visit India soon to work on the final draft of the trade deal. This agreement is expected to further solidify the commercial ties between the two countries and create new opportunities for businesses on both sides. On top of that, the leaders discussed the shared challenge of terrorism, reaffirming their commitment to working together to combat this global threat.
India as a Key Strategic Partner
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described India as a vital strategic partner for the United States, while he remarked that both nations share similar perspectives on almost all major global issues. Rubio emphasized that the two countries would also collaborate closely against drug trafficking and international crime. He raised the issue of the security of international maritime routes, asserting that no entity should be allowed to hold the world's essential waterways hostage. He specifically mentioned that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz is a matter of mutual interest for both India and the United States.
Migration and Visa Concerns
The discussion also touched upon the sensitive issue of visas and migration. Minister Jaishankar stated that Indians who travel to the US through legal channels with valid visas shouldn't face any difficulties, while he added that India would cooperate with the US in cases involving individuals who enter the United States illegally. Secretary Rubio acknowledged that the US is facing a serious migration crisis, with approximately 20 million people residing in the country illegally. He explained that the US migration policy was developed with national security in mind and wasn't intended to target Indian citizens. While some Indians might be currently affected by these policies, Rubio suggested that future improvements to the system would eventually benefit Indian nationals.
