New Delhi : There may be a shortage of liquor in the capital Delhi from Monday. In fact, after the expiry of the license period, private liquor shops in Delhi may be closed from tomorrow, due to which there is uncertainty over the availability of liquor in the capital. However, sources claimed that the Delhi government may bring a notification late Sunday, allowing liquor shops to open in the city by the end of August.

A government source said this is necessary as the government has decided to implement the old excise policy and run the shops through its own agencies. This process could lead to a shortage of alcohol, as it would take several days for new shops to open.

The Delhi government on Saturday decided to re-implement the old excise policy and run its own shops for six months. Under the Excise Policy 2021-22, 468 shops are operating in the city, whose license will expire after July 31.

In many liquor shops in Delhi, the earlier stock was exhausted and the shops were closed by giving discounts in prices and introducing new offers like two freebies at the same time.

The manager of a liquor store in Laxmi Nagar said that there is still a little more wine and beer available and people are coming to get as much as they can. Those who are demanding certain brands have also had to return empty handed.

Vivek, a customer outside a closed liquor shop in Delhi's Sheikh Sarai, said that there was a heavy rush on Saturday, but due to running out of liquor at the shops, customers are going to Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad. A bank worker at Mayur Vihar Extension said that he used to get his favorite brand in nearby shops, but now the stock has run out.
