MK Stalin Vows to Overthrow TVK Government, Citing Changed Political Circumstances

DMK President MK Stalin has launched a sharp attack on the TVK government, claiming it survives on the mercy of former allies. He urged party workers to work towards ending the current regime and ensuring DMK's return to power.

DMK President and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has made a significant political declaration, calling for the removal of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government. Addressing a party event where several AIADMK leaders joined the DMK, Stalin asserted that the political landscape in the state has shifted, necessitating a change in leadership. He revealed that his party had previously refrained from taking steps to destabilize the government to avoid political uncertainty in Tamil Nadu, but he now believes the time has come for action.

The Government is Running on Mercy

During his address to party workers, Stalin launched a scathing attack on the TVK administration, claiming that the current government is functioning solely due to the support of parties that were once part of the DMK-led alliance, while he alleged that these parties secured their assembly seats under the banner of the DMK coalition but are now propping up the TVK government. Stalin stated, "The current government is operating at the mercy of our former alliance partners. Those parties originally wanted the DMK to win. Their leaders had informed me on several occasions that they intended to join the TVK.

Strategic Restraint and Future Goals

Explaining his previous stance, the DMK chief clarified that he didn't want to create a situation that could lead to the imposition of President's rule or allow the BJP to gain a foothold in the state. However, he emphasized that the circumstances have now changed. Stalin called upon his party cadres and workers to actively work towards overthrowing the TVK government, expressing full confidence that the DMK would soon make a grand return to power in Tamil Nadu. "We didn't take any steps to destabilize the government because we didn't want political instability in the state, but now the situation is different," he added.

A Look at the Historic Election Results

The assembly elections held in Tamil Nadu this year produced historic results, leading to a fragmented mandate. Actor Vijay's newly formed party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 seats. However, it fell short of the 118 seats required for a simple majority in the assembly. On the other hand, the DMK-led alliance managed to secure 73 seats. The breakdown of the DMK alliance's performance includes 59 seats for the DMK, 5 seats for the Congress, 2 seats for the CPI, 2 seats for the CPI-M, 2 seats for the VCK, 2 seats for the IUML, and 1 seat for the DMDK.

The Competitive Political Landscape

The AIADMK-led alliance had to settle for 53 seats in the election. Within this coalition, the AIADMK won 47 seats, the PMK secured 4 seats, the BJP won 1 seat, and the AMMK took 1 seat. Since no single party reached the majority mark of 118, the TVK formed the government with the support of other parties. Consequently, C. Joseph Vijay, popularly known as Thalapathy Vijay, took the oath as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Stalin's recent remarks signal a heating up of the political atmosphere as the DMK prepares to challenge the current administration's stability.
