Gunatilaka was out of the Test team for the last three years. He played his last Test in the year 2018. However, after the removal of his ban from international cricket, Gunatilaka can continue to play in limited overs cricket. Before him, recently Sri Lankan cricketer Bhanuka Rajapaksa also announced his retirement. Gunatilka has said that she has informed the SLC about her decision. He had submitted his retirement letter to the Cricket Administration only last week. The opener has said that he has taken the decision after evaluating all aspects and maintaining his fitness for the shorter formats of the game.

Earlier, Sri Lanka Cricket during its executive committee meeting on Friday decided to lift the one-year bans imposed on Danushka as well as Niroshan Dickwella and Kusal Mendis. After the lifting of the ban, these three players will now be available for selection in the upcoming series against Zimbabwe. However, the selection of these players will depend on their fitness. The board had already allowed these three to play in domestic cricket in October. Sri Lanka now has to host Zimbabwe from January 16.
