Sardarshahar News / Stay on the result of the no-confidence motion against Sardarshahar City Council Chairman

The Rajasthan High Court has put an interim stay on the release of the results of the no-confidence motion brought against Sardarshahar Municipal Council Chairman Rajkaran Chaudhary till July 4. However, the process will continue. Allegations of serious procedural lapses and political pressure have also been raised in the court.

Sardarshahar News: The ongoing political developments in Sardarshahar Municipal Council of Churu district of Rajasthan have heated up the politics of the state again. The Rajasthan High Court has made a major intervention regarding the ongoing process on the no-confidence motion brought against the Chairman of the Municipal Council Rajkaran Chaudhary. The court has put an interim stay on the declaration of the result till July 4, 2025, although the process of voting on the proposal has been allowed to continue.

Court's intervention: Difference between process and result

Hearing the petition of Chairman Chaudhary, a single bench of Justice Chandrashekhar Sharma clarified that the process of no-confidence motion will go on, but after the counting of votes, the results will not be made public till the next hearing. This stay has come at a time when the political tussle in the Municipal Council is at its peak.

Allegation of flaw in the process

Senior advocates Dr. Sachin Acharya and Nripan Shankar Acharya had filed this petition in the court on behalf of Ward 33 councilor Madanlal Ojha, stating that the copy of the proposal was not duly given under the rules. The validity of the proposal was questioned citing violation of Rule 3(1) and Rule 2(1)(b).

Political equations and claims

Sardarshahar Municipal Council has a total of 55 elected wards, including 22 BJP, 30 Congress and 3 independent councillors. Apart from this, 2 ex-officio members (MLAs and MPs) can also participate in the voting. In total, at least 43 votes are required to pass the proposal in the 57-member council.

Obstruction in voting and political allegations

Voting on the no-confidence motion was to be held on the scheduled date of June 27, but voting was postponed due to the sudden deterioration in the health of Election Officer ADM Mangalaram Poonia. He was admitted to the hospital due to low BP. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot made serious allegations against the government on social media platform X and wrote that "officers were absent due to state pressure." Gehlot called it an action against democracy and accused the government of making the administration a political weapon. Congress leaders also called it a well thought out strategy.

Chairman's defence: allegations of fake signatures

Chairman Rajkaran Chaudhary says that the signatures of 10 councillors in the proposal are fake and they have not received any formal notice. He had demanded the court to cancel the proposal and postpone the meeting, which has given him partially positive results.

Democratic process vs political conflict

This case of Sardarshahar Nagar Parishad is now not only a local political conflict, but it has also become an example of local self-governance, transparency of democratic process and judicial intervention. Before the next hearing on July 4, all the parties are preparing to present their claims strongly.
