Waqf Amendment Bill: These days there is a lot of commotion in India regarding the Waqf Amendment Act. After being passed by the Parliament and getting the approval of the President, this law has been legally implemented across the country, but its most sharp opposition is being seen in West Bengal. The Chief Minister of the state, Mamata Banerjee, is not only vocal about this issue, but has also opened an open front against it.Mamata's roar at Netaji Indoor StadiumMamata Banerjee met Muslim religious leaders and imams at Kolkata's Netaji Indoor Stadium and brainstormed on the upcoming strategy against the Waqf Act. Many influential religious and social leaders including All India Muslim Personal Law Board chief Saifullah Rahmani, General Secretary Fazlurrahim Mujaddidi, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim attended this meeting.In her address, Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the central government. She said, "Bengal is being defamed by showing fake videos of UP and Bihar. This is all a conspiracy. BJP wants to tarnish the image of Bengal through fake news and media."She also made it clear that if the Bharatiya Janata Party is out of power, the Waqf Amendment Act will be repealed. Mamata talked about giving respect to both Imams and priests and described the ideology of Rabindranath Tagore as her inspiration.The matter reached the Supreme CourtMamata Banerjee's party, Trinamool Congress (TMC), had strongly opposed the Waqf Amendment Bill in Parliament. Now that this law has been passed and implemented, the party leader Mahua Moitra has approached the Supreme Court against it. The court has termed this law as against religious freedom and the Constitution and demanded its repeal.Concern of Muslim society and protests on the streetsProtests are also going on on the streets against the Waqf Act, especially in Bengal. The Muslim community considers it a part of Sharia and is rejecting any interference by the government. The community says that government control over Waqf properties is not only an interference in religious matters, but it is also a violation of constitutional rights.Will not allow the law to be implemented in Bengal: MamataMamata Banerjee has categorically said that this law will not be allowed to be implemented in West Bengal. Calling it an "attack on religious freedom", she claimed that it is not only against the Muslim community but also against the Indian Constitution.
