Amidst the prevailing severe heat and heatwave conditions, the Basic Education Department of Uttar Pradesh has issued a detailed set of guidelines. The guidelines were prepared under the direct instructions of Parthasarathi Sen Sharma, the Additional Chief Secretary of the Basic and Secondary Education Department. The primary objective of this initiative is to equip teachers with the essential knowledge, skills, and practical guidance required to identify symptoms of heatstroke, provide immediate first aid, and ensure the effective protection of students. The Pivotal Role of Teachers
The state government has clarified that teachers are the most important link in protecting children from the heatwave. They're expected to use various platforms such as prayer assemblies, classroom teaching, co-curricular activities, and the daily school routine to inform students about heatwave prevention measures. Teachers have been instructed to encourage students to drink plenty of water throughout the day, avoid direct exposure to sunlight, and wear light-colored cotton clothing that allows the skin to breathe, while Plus, students should be advised to consume fruits with high water content and be taught how to recognize the early signs of heatstroke in themselves and others. Medical Readiness and Activity Scheduling
The guidelines mandate that every school must be equipped with a first aid kit, ORS (Oral Rehydration Salts), digital thermometers, and established medical contact arrangements. Schools must also have the contact details for the 108 ambulance service readily available. To minimize exposure to the harsh sun, the government has directed that prayer assemblies, sports, physical education, and any other outdoor activities must be conducted before 10 AM.
