Gujarat / 14 people detained for protesting against 'Agneepath' scheme in Ahmedabad

In Gujarat's Ahmedabad city, 14 people who had gathered without permission to protest against the Centre's 'Agnipath' scheme announced for the recruitment of youth in the armed forces were taken into custody on Sunday. Police gave this information, Some of the protesters claimed that they had gathered to protest the plan in a Gandhian manner. Around 100 people, mostly local residents, gathered at a place in Ahmedabad city's Meghaninagar area to protest against 'Agneepath', a scheme announced by the Center to recruit youth in the Army for a four-year term.

'Agneepath scheme will kill the youth and destroy the army'

However, one of the protesters said that we were protesting in Gandhian way, but we were not allowed to sit even for a few minutes. Police reached there and took us into custody. We want permission to protest till our demands are met and the plan is not withdrawn.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday met the chiefs of the three services amid growing protests against the 'Agneepath' military recruitment scheme in many parts of the country. It is reported that the deliberations focused on pacifying the protesters.

As protests intensified in various parts of the country, the Defense Minister on Saturday approved a proposal to reserve 10 per cent jobs for recruitment under the 'Agneepath' scheme in various units under the ministry. No violent protest against the scheme has been reported in Gujarat so far.
