BJP Triumphs in Falta Re-poll: PM Modi Hails Victory of Democracy

BJP candidate Debangshu Panda secured a historic victory in the Falta assembly re-poll, defeating the CPI(M) candidate by over 1 lakh votes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the result as a victory for democracy and a defeat for threats in West Bengal.

In a significant political development in West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has registered a historic victory in the re-polling held for the Falta assembly seat. This victory is being seen as a major blow to the Trinamool Congress (TMC), as the BJP successfully dismantled what was long considered a TMC stronghold. BJP candidate Debangshu Panda emerged victorious with a massive margin, defeating his nearest rival from the CPI(M) by 1,09,021 votes. The ruling TMC suffered a humiliating defeat, with its candidate finishing in fourth place and losing his security deposit.

Detailed Election Results and Margins

The election results revealed a complete shift in the political landscape of Falta. BJP candidate Debangshu Panda secured a total of 1,49,666 votes, showcasing a strong wave of support in his favor. Shambhu Nath Kurmi, the candidate from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), managed to get 40,645 votes, securing the second position. The Congress candidate, Abdur Razzak Molla, stood third with 10,084 votes. The most shocking outcome was for the TMC candidate, Jahangir Khan, who could only garner 7,783 votes, leading to the forfeiture of his deposit. This result is particularly striking given that Falta has long been considered part of the politically influential Diamond Harbour region, where TMC had previously maintained a strong grip.

PM Modi Hails the Victory

Following the announcement of the results, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his joy and termed it a victory for democracy. In a social media post, the Prime Minister congratulated Debangshu Panda for his record-breaking victory margin. He stated, "The people of Falta have given their verdict! Democracy has won and threats have lost. " The Prime Minister further emphasized that this victory reflects the unwavering trust of the people of West Bengal in the BJP. He noted that the public is observing the extraordinary work being done by the party across various sectors and has chosen to bless them further. PM Modi also extended his congratulations to BJP workers across the state for their outstanding efforts and reaffirmed the party's commitment to the progress of Bengal.

Shift in Vote Share and Background

The re-poll results indicate a massive shift in voter sentiment compared to the 2021 assembly elections. In 2021, the TMC had easily retained the seat with a vote share of approximately 57 percent. 75 percent in 2021.7 percent. Political analysts view this as a sign of a major change in the state's political dynamics. The Election Commission had ordered the re-poll for all 285 booths on May 21 after receiving complaints regarding the use of chemicals like ink, adhesives, and perfumes on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) during the initial voting on April 29. The re-polling was conducted under heavy security arrangements.

Political Reactions and Allegations

Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari described the result as proof of independent voting by the public. He stated that voters finally had the opportunity to cast their ballots without pressure or fear. Adhikari accused the TMC of misusing state machinery and practicing the politics of intimidation. Without naming him directly, he also targeted TMC General Secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee, calling him a fraud who rose to power suddenly. Adhikari claimed that this result is just the beginning and that the people of West Bengal are preparing to comprehensively reject the TMC politically. Meanwhile, the victorious candidate Debangshu Panda expressed his gratitude to the people of Falta, stating that this was a victory for the citizens who finally got a chance to vote in a free and fair manner.
