India-Russia Relation: Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar is in Moscow on a 5-day visit amid the Russia-Ukraine war. India and Russia on Tuesday signed "some very important" agreements related to the construction of future power generation units of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said. Jaishankar is here on a five-day visit to meet with the leadership of Russia. He made the announcement after a “comprehensive and constructive” meeting with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov on bilateral economic cooperation.

During this meeting, agreements were signed on nuclear energy and drugs, pharmaceutical substances and medical devices. "Today, in the presence of me and Deputy Prime Minister Manturov, we signed some very important agreements related to future units of the Kudankulam nuclear project," he said while addressing the Indian diaspora here. According to Russian state media. The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant is being built in Tamil Nadu with technical assistance from Russia. Its construction started in March 2002. The first power unit of the Kudankulan Nuclear Power Plant has been in continuous operation since February 2016, with a design capacity of 1,000 MW. The plant is expected to begin operating at full capacity in 2027.

Payment related problems between India and Russia will be resolved

During the meeting, Jaishankar noted progress in trade, finance, connectivity, energy, civil aviation and nuclear sectors. In his address to the Indian community, he described Russia as a “special partner” in some areas like defence, nuclear energy and space. He said, "Cooperation in the areas of defence, space and nuclear (energy) is done with those countries with whom you have a high level of trust." Jaishankar also said that both sides have agreed that That their negotiating teams will meet by the end of January to begin individual talks on a free trade agreement between India and the Eurasian Economic Zone.

Responding to questions at the event, he said, “Today, when I met the Prime Minister, we agreed that our negotiating teams will meet early next year. Therefore, I hope that by the end of January we will sit face to face and start talks.'' On a question on the payment problem between Russia and India, the Foreign Minister said that in any unusual situation, we are looking for ways in which the bank can -Can transact with others.

Jaishankar will meet his counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday and discuss bilateral, multilateral and international issues. He also praised the contribution of the Indian community in building a strong and stable partnership between India and Russia. Jaishankar also visited the Russian Industry and Trade Exhibition with Manturov. Relations between India and Russia remain strong despite Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Import of Russian crude oil by India has increased significantly, while there is uneasiness about it in many western countries. India has not yet condemned Russia's attack on Ukraine and has been saying that the issue should be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue.
