A tragic incident has been reported from Muzaffarpur, Bihar, where a massive fire broke out at Prasad Hospital located in the Brahmapura area. The fire originated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) situated on the fifth floor of the hospital building, while according to preliminary reports, the fire was caused by a short circuit, which quickly escalated, filling the entire ward with thick smoke and causing panic among patients, staff, and visitors. In this horrific accident, three patients lost their lives due to severe burn injuries and suffocation caused by the dense smoke.
Emergency Response and Rescue Operations
As soon as the information about the fire reached the authorities, teams from the fire brigade and the local police administration rushed to the spot. To combat the raging flames, half a dozen fire engines were deployed. Firefighters faced significant challenges as they worked tirelessly to control the blaze and evacuate those trapped inside the smoke-filled ICU. After hours of intense effort, the fire was brought under control, and the rescue teams managed to pull out several individuals from the danger zone. The hospital premises witnessed scenes of chaos and despair as family members of the patients waited anxiously for news of their loved ones.
Allegations of Safety Negligence
The family members of the victims and other patients have raised serious allegations against the hospital management, while they claimed that the fire control system within the hospital was non-functional at the time of the emergency. When the fire broke out, a stampede-like situation occurred as people tried to flee the building to save their lives. While many managed to escape, the patients admitted to the ICU were the most vulnerable. The lack of immediate fire suppression measures contributed to the tragedy, leading to the death of three individuals who couldn't be evacuated in time. Following the incident, several other patients were immediately referred and shifted to nearby hospitals for continued treatment.
Official Statements and Investigation
Ram Niwas Pandey, an official from the Fire Department, provided details regarding the ongoing assessment of the situation. He stated that while 3 deaths have been confirmed so far, it remains difficult to provide an exact final count of the casualties at this moment. He noted that the suffocation caused by the smoke in the enclosed ICU ward was a major factor in the fatalities. The fire department is currently working to collect all necessary details and evidence from the site, while on the other hand, the hospital management has stated that they're fully cooperating with the administration and that a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident is being conducted. The incident has sparked a wave of mourning and anger across the city, with local residents highlighting the recurring issue of private hospitals failing to adhere to mandatory safety standards.
