More than 100 people have fallen ill following a Norovirus outbreak on the luxury cruise ship Caribbean Princess. S. health agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 102 passengers and 13 crew members on board have been affected. This brings the total number of individuals showing infection-like symptoms to 115. Those ill have reported symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea, which are common indicators of Norovirus. This incident comes shortly after another cruise ship reported three deaths due to a Hantavirus outbreak, further escalating health concerns.
Details of the Outbreak and CDC Notification
The Caribbean Princess departed from Florida, USA, on April 28 for a 13-day voyage. The ship was carrying 3,116 passengers and 1,131 crew members. By May 7, the number of sick individuals on board exceeded the established threshold, prompting the ship's management to notify the CDC. Under CDC regulations, public disclosure is mandatory if more than 3% of the people on board fall ill. Princess Cruises, the operating company, described the situation as a mild stomach illness, while the company noted that the illnesses didn't occur simultaneously and many passengers have already recovered.
Voyage Route and Sanitization Measures
During its journey, the ship visited several destinations, including the Bahamas, Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, St. Maarten, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Nassau. Following the outbreak, cleaning and sanitization efforts on the ship were intensified. Every part of the vessel was frequently cleaned to prevent the virus from spreading further. The company stated that a comprehensive cleaning and disinfection process would be carried out once the ship reaches Port Canaveral on May 11. Jan Van Milligan, a passenger on board, mentioned that the atmosphere remains normal, with people continuing to eat and watch shows. He added that the cruise staff has taken necessary precautions to contain the infection.
Understanding Norovirus and Its Symptoms
Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes infection in the stomach and intestines. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, mild fever, and body aches. The virus spreads through contaminated food, water, dirty surfaces, and contact with infected individuals, while it can spread very rapidly in enclosed spaces like cruise ships.
The ship's management has clarified that the situation is under control and all safety protocols are being followed to ensure passenger well-being, while upon arrival at Port Canaveral on May 11, the ship will undergo deep disinfection to ensure safety for future voyages.
