Oil India Discovers Second Natural Gas Reserve in Andaman Offshore Region

Oil India Limited (OIL) has successfully discovered its second natural gas reserve in the Andaman offshore area at the Vijaypuram-3 well. This discovery, located 15 km off the east coast, strengthens the potential of the Andaman basin as a significant hydrocarbon producer.

Oil India Limited (OIL), a prominent Maharatna public sector undertaking in the energy sector, has achieved a significant milestone by discovering its second natural gas reserve in the Andaman offshore region. This discovery is expected to bolster the potential of this frontier basin as a major hydrocarbon-producing area in the coming years. The announcement was made by the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, on Friday, highlighting the strategic importance of this find for India's energy security and its exploration efforts in deep-sea regions.

Details of the Vijaypuram-3 Discovery

The latest discovery was made at the Vijaypuram-3 exploration well, which is situated in the Andaman offshore block AN-OSHP-2018/1. This block was awarded to Oil India Limited under the Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP). The well is located approximately 15 kilometers away from the eastern coast of the Andaman Islands. The drilling operations were conducted in a marine environment where the water depth is approximately 355 meters. This marks the second successful gas-bearing well drilled by Oil India in this specific geographical area, reinforcing the company's exploration strategy and its commitment to unlocking the energy potential of the Andaman Islands.

Technical Specifications and Drilling Process

Oil India Limited provided detailed information regarding the discovery to the stock exchanges, including the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE). According to the company, the drilling at the Vijaypuram-3 well (Location OAEB) reached a significant depth within the Eocene formation. The well was drilled to a depth of more than 1,900 meters. During the initial production testing phase, the presence of natural gas was confirmed through continuous flaring. This flaring is a standard procedure used to verify the flow and presence of hydrocarbons in a newly drilled well.

The company further noted that immediately after the perforation process, the pressure within the well began to build up rapidly, and production commenced. This rapid pressure increase is a positive indicator of the reservoir's potential and the volume of gas present. To gain a deeper understanding of the gas characteristics, Oil India is currently conducting extensive sampling. These samples will be used for isotope studies to determine the origin and formation process of the gas, as well as to calculate its specific composition and calorific value.

Strategic Importance and Previous Success

This discovery follows a previous success by Oil India in the same region. In September of last year, the company had discovered natural gas in the Vijaypuram-2 well. The company stated that the recent find at Vijaypuram-3 is a crucial indicator of the source of hydrocarbons, their migration pathways, and the presence of accumulation within the existing prospects. This data will be instrumental in formulating future exploration strategies for the Andaman offshore area. Out of the three exploration wells drilled by Oil India in the Andaman region so far, two have now been confirmed to contain hydrocarbons, representing a high success rate for such a frontier exploration zone.
