Defense Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated expansion projects worth 3500 crore rupees in West Bengal, highlighting India's potential to fill the global vacuum in shipbuilding through GRSE and Yantra India Limited.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh stated on Sunday that India has a significant opportunity to emerge as a global shipbuilding hub, while addressing an event in Kolkata, he emphasized that India can capitalize on the vacuum being created within the industry in traditional shipbuilding nations to establish itself as a world-class center for vessel construction. He pointed out that the country possesses a large workforce, a solid steel industry, and the inherent capability to adopt new technologies rapidly, which are essential ingredients for this transformation.

Expansion Projects in West Bengal

The Defense Minister was speaking after virtually laying the foundation stones for five major expansion projects of Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) and Yantra India Limited. These strategic projects involve a total expenditure of approximately 3500 crore rupees in West Bengal. Rajnath Singh noted that shipbuilding technology is evolving at a fast pace, and as traditional manufacturers gradually reduce their production, a massive opportunity has opened up for India to strengthen its position in the global maritime sector.

Development of Raichak Shipbuilding Hub

To enhance its production capacity, GRSE is developing two small shipyards on both banks of the Hooghly River. As part of this expansion, the company has signed a lease agreement with the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, for 32 acres of riverfront land located in Raichak. According to GRSE, this facility in Raichak will be developed into a dedicated shipbuilding hub with an investment exceeding 2500 crore rupees. This initiative is expected to Notably boost the capacity for both the construction and repair of advanced warships.

Investment in Yantra India Limited

On top of that, two new facilities are set to be developed at the Metal and Steel Factory of Yantra India Limited located in Ishapore. An investment of more than 750 crore rupees has been proposed for these specific projects. The primary objective of these developments is to strengthen indigenous metallurgical capabilities and bolster the domestic defense manufacturing ecosystem. These projects are anticipated to fortify the industrial landscape of West Bengal, creating numerous employment opportunities and opening new avenues for auxiliary industries, particularly within the MSME sector.

Political Context and State Development

Rajnath Singh remarked that a new era of development is beginning in West Bengal, while he recalled that previously, the state was often in the news for factory closures and lockouts, but now, significant new projects are being initiated. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari was also present at the program. He alleged that previous governments in the state failed to collaborate with the Central Government for development. Adhikari stated that 50 years of negativity have finally come to an end, and the double-engine government will now ensure that West Bengal progresses rapidly on the path of growth.
