In a significant geopolitical development, US President Donald Trump has made a major statement regarding the recent attacks on Indian sailors in the Gulf of Oman. Donald Trump claimed that Iran was responsible for the drone attacks on Indian ships in the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasized that any form of attack on Indian vessels wouldn't be tolerated under any circumstances. This statement from the US President comes in the wake of three separate incidents of attacks on Indian sailors in the Gulf of Oman, which have raised serious security concerns in the region.
Sequence of Attacks and Casualties
The situation escalated following a series of attacks on commercial ships. According to the reports, the US military carried out attacks on three commercial ships on June 8, June 9, and June 11. The consequences of these strikes were severe, particularly the incident that occurred on June 9. In that specific attack, four Indian citizens lost their lives, leading to a sharp diplomatic reaction from New Delhi. Despite the US military's involvement in these dates, President Trump has pointed the finger at Iran for the drone strikes targeting Indian interests in the strategic waterway.
Trump Labels Iran Deal as Fake News
President Donald Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to express his views on the ongoing tensions and the nature of negotiations with Iran. He wrote that the terms described by Iran have nothing to do with the terms that were actually agreed upon in writing, while trump dismissed these reports as fake news. He further stated that their weak and shameful statements regarding the deal have no relation to the truth. Trump characterized dealing with Iran as a highly dishonest endeavor, asserting that no honest deal can be made with them at this stage.
The Strait of Hormuz Incident
Speaking specifically about the Indian ships, Trump mentioned that the drone attacks carried out by Iran on Indian vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz last night were completely foiled. He reiterated that such actions are absolutely unacceptable and warned that Iran must rectify its behavior as soon as possible. This statement creates a complex narrative, as it directly attributes the drone activity to Iran while the broader context involves US military operations in the same vicinity during the preceding days.
The MT Jalveer Missile Attack
The tension between India and the US regarding these maritime incidents became evident when India summoned the Charge d'Affaires of the US Embassy to issue a warning. Following this, on a subsequent Thursday, the US military's Central Command carried out a missile attack on a commercial ship named MT Jalveer. The US Central Command even shared information about this specific attack through a tweet, confirming their involvement in the strike against the commercial vessel.
Contradictions Between Trump and the US Military
A notable point of relief in the MT Jalveer incident was that all crew members on board were safely rescued by the Omani rescue team, while however, the diplomatic friction continued as the Ministry of External Affairs once again summoned the US Charge d'Affaires, Jason Meeks, on Friday. India expressed strong objections to the targeting of Indian sailors in international waters. Interestingly, while the US Army released video footage claiming responsibility for the attacks, President Trump has publicly contradicted this by stating that the attacks on Indian ships were carried out by Iran and not the United States. This discrepancy between the President's rhetoric and the military's documented actions has added a layer of confusion to the international response.
