Ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Samajwadi Party (SP) National President Akhilesh Yadav has initiated a significant shift in his political strategy. While the party continues to champion its traditional 'Social Justice' platform under the PDA (Pichda, Dalit, Alpasankhyak) banner, it's now increasingly incorporating elements of 'Soft Hindutva', while this new approach is characterized by frequent temple visits, vocal stances on issues related to Lord Ram, and active participation in religious events, signaling a move to broaden the party's appeal among Hindu voters.
The Evolution of the PDA Strategy
Following the Samajwadi Party's notable success in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections using the PDA slogan, the leadership is now focused on maintaining this social alliance while simultaneously increasing its acceptability among the wider Hindu electorate. Political analysts observe that Akhilesh Yadav is navigating a path that seeks to harmonize social justice with religious and cultural identity. This dual strategy aims to present the SP as a comprehensive alternative to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
A Shifted Stance on the Ram Temple
Historically, the BJP has accused the SP of distancing itself from the Ram Temple and Hindutva issues. However, the current narrative has changed. Akhilesh Yadav has been vocal regarding the alleged theft of offerings at the Ram Temple, questioning the management of the trust and the government's oversight. Despite these criticisms, he maintains a respectful tone toward the deity, frequently stating that "Lord Shri Ram belongs to everyone" and noting that the tradition of the 'Ram Darbar' exists in every Sanatani household. He has accused the BJP of playing with both 'faith and the constitution'.
Increased Religious Visibility and Temple Projects
The religious activities of Akhilesh Yadav and his family have seen a marked increase. The SP chief is currently overseeing the construction of the Kedareshwar Mahadev Temple in Kannauj, a project he mentions frequently in press conferences. On top of that, his wife, Dimple Yadav, and their children have been active in religious rituals. Recently, their children Arjun and Tina visited the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, while the family also organized a 'Bhandara' (community feast) in Saifai. Such engagements are viewed as a deliberate effort to integrate Sanatan traditions into the party's public image.
Balancing PDA with Cultural Identity
The primary challenge for Akhilesh Yadav remains the retention of his core PDA vote bank while reaching out to a segment of Hindu voters. This explains his simultaneous focus on reservation, constitutional rights, and the empowerment of Dalits and backward classes alongside his vocal presence on religious issues. This strategy is designed to prevent the BJP from gaining a total monopoly on religious polarization. By acknowledging religious faith, the SP aims to neutralize the BJP's 'Hard Hindutva' narrative.
Digital PDA Campaign and Fundraising
In a move to modernize party operations, Akhilesh Yadav launched the 'PDA Swabhiman Sahyog Abhiyan'. This initiative utilizes QR codes to collect a minimum contribution of 20 rupees for the party fund. Alongside this, a digital membership drive has been announced. The party asserts that this campaign isn't merely about fundraising but is a strategic tool to strengthen the organization at the booth level and connect with new supporters across the state.
Soft Hindutva vs. Hard Hindutva
In the political landscape of Uttar Pradesh, the BJP has long centered its politics on 'Hard Hindutva', focusing on the Ram Temple, Kashi, Mathura, and cultural nationalism. In contrast, the Samajwadi Party is now avoiding direct opposition to Hindutva. Instead, it's embracing religious faith while accusing the BJP of politicizing it, while akhilesh Yadav's message is that while faith is universal, its use for political gain shouldn't be acceptable. This shift includes mentions of astrology and religious symbols in public speeches, such as his recent stay in Prayagraj and discussions on auspicious signs. To avoid giving the BJP any political ammunition, he has also instructed party workers to refrain from making controversial comments on religious matters.
