Delhi / Lok Sabha passes Transgender Persons Bill

Lok Sabha today passed the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2019.

Moving the Bill, Minister for State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Kishan Pal Gurjar said, the Bill prohibits the discrimination against a transgender person, including denial of service or unfair treatment in relation to education, employment, healthcare, access to, or enjoyment of goods, facilities, opportunities available to the public. Cutting across party lines, members spoke in favour of the Bill. 

The Bill defines a transgender person as one whose gender does not match the gender assigned at birth. The Bill provides every transgender person shall have a right to reside and be included in his household. 

Taking part in the debate, BJP’s Manoj Tiwari said, maximum demands of the transgender community have been included in the Bill. He said, people’s prejudice regarding transgenders needs to be changed.

Shiv Sena’s Vinayak Raut said, this Bill enables various welfare measures and prohibition of discrimination against transgenders. He said, this Bill lays emphasis on educating, skilling and making transgenders employable.
