According to media reports, the police are still interrogating the detained people. The death toll in the cable bridge accident on the Machhu river in Gujarat's Morbi city rose to 134 on Monday. A senior Gujarat Police official said that the rescue operation is on. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi stayed overnight in Morbi to oversee the rescue operation being carried out by several agencies. A criminal case has been registered against the maintenance agency under sections 304, 308 and 114 regarding the Morbi accident. SIT has been formed for Morbi accident. The SIT has also started investigation into the accident.

Now it is also coming out in some media reports that the police have detained 9 people in connection with this accident. According to the information received so far, those who were taken into custody include the manager of the bridge and the maintenance supervisor. Apart from this, all the people related to the management of the bridge are also being questioned. It is being told that this bridge had not yet received the fitness certificate. Apart from this, it was opened to the general public without permission. After which this big accident has come to the fore.

This bridge built over the Machu river in Morbi, located about 300 km from the capital Gandhinagar, is more than a century old. After repair and renovation work, it was opened to the general public five days back. The bridge was broken at around 6.30 pm on Sunday. Rajkot Range Inspector General Ashok Yadav told PTI-language, "The death toll in the bridge collapse incident has risen to 134." State Information Department said that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Five teams, six teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), one Air Force team, two Army units and two Indian Navy teams, besides local rescue teams are involved in the search operation. The search operation went on overnight, which is still on. "The rescue operation is still on," Yadav said.

After this accident, many eyewitnesses have said that when this "hanging bridge" of the British era broke down, many women and children were present on it and they fell into the river due to the collapse of the bridge. When the bridge broke, apart from the local people, people from nearby towns and villages were also present on the bridge. There was a lot of crowd on this bridge, which was the center of attraction for tourists due to Diwali holiday and Sunday. Many videos are coming out after the accident. In this video people are seen fighting to save their lives.

An eyewitness said that before the accident some people were seen jumping on the bridge and pulling on its large wires. He said the bridge may have collapsed due to the "huge crowd" on it. He told that when the bridge broke, people fell on top of each other. Several people were also seen hanging from one end of the bridge to save themselves from falling into the river. After the bridge collapsed, a part of it hanged in the river.

At a local hospital, people formed a human chain to prevent overcrowding and clear the way for an ambulance. A private operator did the repair work of the bridge for about six months. The bridge was reopened to the public on 26 October, the Gujarati New Year's Day. It was opened to the public after the repair work was completed but the local civic body had not yet issued any fitness certificate, an official said.

Announcement of compensation, PM Narendra Modi's road show canceled

After this incident, the Prime Minister's Office tweeted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was present in Gujarat, has spoken to Chief Minister Patel and other officials. Modi has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the kin of the dead and Rs 50,000 each to the injured from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF). The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of those killed in the accident and Rs 50,000 each to the injured. Following the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has canceled his roadshow to be held in Ahmedabad on Monday in view of the state assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sources said.
