PM Modi China Visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin on Sunday morning on his first visit to China after seven years. During this visit, he will also participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting. This visit is considered important in terms of giving a new direction to India-China relations.

Highlights of bilateral talks

Prime Minister Modi said in his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, "We had a very meaningful discussion in Kazan last year, which gave a positive direction to our relations. An atmosphere of peace and stability has been created after disengagement on the border."

He further said, "An agreement has been reached between our special representatives regarding border management. Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has been resumed and direct flights between the two countries are also being restored." PM Modi stressed that the interests of 2.8 billion people of both countries are linked to mutual cooperation, which will pave the way for the welfare of the entire human society. He also expressed commitment to take forward the relations based on mutual trust, respect and sensitivity.

• Peace and stability on the border: The reduction in tensions on the border created a peaceful atmosphere.
• Consensus on border management: Consensus was reached on border management between the special representatives.
• Restoration of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra: Pilgrimage resumed, which will strengthen cultural ties.
• Start of direct flights: Direct flights resumed between the two countries.
• Trust and respect based relationship: Emphasis on enhancing relations with mutual trust and sensitivity.

Visit to China after seven years

This is Prime Minister Modi's first visit to China after seven years. Tensions in India-China relations had increased after the violent clash in the Galwan Valley in the year 2020. However, with this visit and recent diplomatic initiatives, the relationship between the two countries seems to be back on track. Earlier this month, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited India, where he held talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

SCO meeting and tariff issue

The SCO meeting will discuss cooperation between India and China as well as regional and global issues. Meanwhile, the high tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on other SCO countries, including 50% on India, 30% on China, and 25% on Kazakhstan, may also be a topic of discussion. These tariffs may have an impact on regional trade and cooperation, which is likely to be resolved through talks on the SCO platform.
