A massive earthquake measuring between 6.0 and 6.3 on the Richter scale struck eastern Afghanistan during the night of August 31–September 1, 2025. Provinces such as Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman, and Nuristan were hit the hardest. This has been recorded as one of the deadliest earthquakes in Afghanistan in recent times.
Casualties and Impact
Reports indicate that over 1,100 people have lost their lives, while thousands are injured. More than 3,500 people are estimated to be hurt, and many still remain trapped under the rubble. Kunar province saw the most destruction, with several villages completely wiped out.
Geographical and Natural Challenges
The shallow depth of the earthquake amplified the tremors, causing widespread destruction. Landslides triggered by the quake and heavy rains blocked roads, cutting off access to remote regions. These obstacles have severely hampered relief operations.
Rescue and Relief Efforts
Local authorities, supported by international agencies, have launched large-scale rescue missions. Helicopters and military teams have evacuated hundreds of victims, both injured and deceased. Dozens of flights have been used to transport casualties and relief materials. However, many isolated areas remain inaccessible.
Humanitarian and Economic Crisis
Afghanistan was already reeling under a severe humanitarian and economic crisis. Rising unemployment, food shortages, lack of healthcare, and reduced foreign aid had made life extremely difficult. The earthquake has added another layer of hardship, leaving thousands homeless and vulnerable. Children, women, and the elderly are among the worst affected.
India’s Response
India was among the first countries to extend humanitarian support. It has dispatched 1,000 family tents to Kabul and 15 tonnes of food supplies to Kunar and other affected provinces. Indian leaders, including the External Affairs Minister and Prime Minister, have expressed condolences and assured Afghanistan of continued assistance.
International Aid Mobilization
The United Nations, Red Cross, and other humanitarian organizations have also stepped in to provide critical supplies including medical aid, food, and clean drinking water. Countries like the UK and China have pledged assistance. However, political instability and difficult terrain remain major challenges for effective distribution of aid.
