Google Layoffs 2025 / Google is now also under threat of AI, so many jobs may be lost

Google has announced a Voluntary Exit Program (VEP) in June 2025, under which employees can voluntarily leave the job. This step is part of the company's plan to cut costs and invest heavily in AI. This is affecting many departments including search, K&I, marketing.

Google Layoffs 2025: Technology giant Google is once again in the news—this time because of a new layoff strategy. After laying off about 200 employees from its Global Business Unit in May 2025, the company has now taken a new step: Voluntary Exit Program (VEP). Through this scheme, Google is giving its employees the option to quit their jobs at their own will.

Which departments will be affected?

This time, the sword of Google's layoff is not hanging over just one unit but over many departments. Important departments like Search Team, Knowledge & Information (K&I), Central Engineering, Marketing, and Research & Communications are under the purview of this soft layoff.

What will be received on accepting VEP?

  • Employees who accept this voluntary exit plan will be given financial relief by the company. Under this:
  • 14 weeks base salary
  • 1 week additional salary for every full year of service
  • (This scheme is implemented specifically for employees working in the US)
Why is Google taking this step?

This strategy of Google is an important step towards heavy investment in AI (Artificial Intelligence). The company's new CFO Anat Ashkenazi had indicated in October 2024 itself that Google will focus strongly on AI infrastructure in the coming years. For this, there is a need to cut costs and restructure resources.

Google is now also emphasizing on training its employees in AI tools, so that they can make their roles more effective with new technologies.

Nick Fox's clear message

K&I department head Nick Fox has sent an email to employees, writing, "If you are serious and enthusiastic about your work, do not opt for this scheme. But if you do not match our policy or are struggling in your role, this could be an opportunity for a respectful farewell."

Increased pressure to return to office

Google is now moving towards a hybrid work model. The company is now expecting employees whose homes are within 50 miles of the office to come to the office. This is an indication that Google wants to turn its work culture back towards the traditional office system.
