New Delhi : Justice UU Lalit will be the next Chief Justice of the country. Chief Justice NV Ramana has recommended his name as his successor. Justice UU Lalit will be the 49th Chief Justice of India. NV Ramana is retiring this month, after which UU Lalit will take over as the head of the Supreme Court. According to the order of seniority, Justice UU Lalit was the contender to become the Chief Justice. Justice UU Lalit has been a part of the bench giving important decisions like triple talaq which had a big impact on the social system of the country.

Justice Lalit will be the second CJI in the country, who came from the Bar Council to become a judge and then got a chance to become the Chief Justice. Earlier this happened in March 1964, then Justice SM Sikri got a chance to become a judge from the Bar Council and then he also became the CJI. Justice S.M. Sikri became the Chief Justice of the country in January 1971.

Justice NV Ramana will retire from his post on August 26. Justice UU Lalit will take over the next day. Justice Lalit has been one of the eminent lawyers of the country and was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court on August 13, 2014. Since then, he has been a part of many important decisions of the Supreme Court. He had also pronounced the verdict in the matter related to the maintenance of the Padmanabha Swamy temple in Kerala. Not only this, Justice UU Lalit was also a member of the bench which gave an important decision regarding the POCSO Act. In this judgment, it was said that if anyone touches the private parts of the child with wrong intention, then that too will be considered as sexual harassment under section 7 of the POCSO Act.

Tenure will be less than three months, retirement in November

Under this decision, the Supreme Court had set aside the order of the Bombay High Court, in which it had said that if there is no skin to skin contact, then it will not be considered as sexual harassment. Born on November 9, 1957, Justice UU Lalit started his career as an advocate in June 1983. He was a lawyer of the Bombay High Court till 1985. After this, Vag came to Delhi in 1986 and in April 2004 he started practice as a senior advocate in the Supreme Court. He got an opportunity to represent the CBI in the 2G spectrum scam as a special public prosecutor. Justice UU Lalit's tenure as Chief Justice will be very short and he will retire on November 8, 2022.
