New Delhi: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have announced an alliance for the 2022 assembly elections in Punjab. Describing this as a new day in the politics of Punjab, Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh made this announcement. After 25 years, both these parties will again enter the electoral fray together.

Seats have also been divided

Regarding seat sharing, Badal said that out of 117 seats in these elections, BSP will contest 20 seats and Shiromani Akali Dal will contest on the remaining 97 seats. Also said that together we will get a big victory in the elections. Let us tell you that last year the Akali Dal broke the alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the new agricultural laws of the central government. The SAD has tied up with the BSP to compensate for the loss caused due to this.

Dalits constitute about 33% of the population in Punjab and this Dalit vote bank has formed the basis of the alliance of BSP and Akali Dal.

Last week's announcement

Last week, Sukhbir Singh Badal had announced that his party was ready to forge an alliance with any party except the BJP, the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party. After this the formation of SAD and BSP was formed. Earlier, Akali Dal and BSP had formed an alliance 25 years ago in 1996 for the Lok Sabha elections and won 11 out of 13 seats in Punjab. The BSP won all 3 seats and the Akali Dal won 8 out of 10 seats in the election.
